Well, I think that I found out what the 'chattering' noise was. It appeared to be coming from the drive pulley, as it was slightly loose on the shaft. I was able to get the secondary drive pulley (the one on the transmission output shaft) off with a little heat and wrenchin'. It was a little loose (rocked on the output shaft splines), but the shaft splines look undamaged. The shaft and seal look good, no leakage, grime or movement. Luckily I got it in time, the question is, what should I replace it with? I noticed two 26 toothed options in the Drag Specialties 'Fat Book". One was aluminium and was called the 'race' verson. On was steel and was called the 'long life' version. Is the weight difference really going to improve performance, should I go with the 26 tooth, should I look else where to purchase the pulley? Does anyone have any comments or suggestions.

Zeniker:

Have a 97S3T which came with 29T countershaft sprocket ... Tried a 27T, but did not like it and went back to the 29T ... Stick with OEM sprocket metal as they last longer ...

Tried a Aluminum Alloy sprocket, BUT took it off because it was wearing out fast ...

Weight will improve performance as for every 12 pounds you can lighten yourself or your BUELL you will gain ONE FREE ROLLING HORSE POWER that will not show up on a DYNO ...

As soon as "i" get 100,000 miles on my BUELL the plan is to put on XB 12 gearing ... That consists of puting on a 38T motor(engine) sprocket and primary chain ... Put this gearing on my BLAST and it made a big RPM differance on the Interstate ...

If this is an S-2, stock was 29 tooth and the early ones had slim area of splines and were prone to failure,if you have a stock motor I would stick with the 29,if you have hotrod with big cams etc go with 27. I have hotrodded 1250 with a Baker 6 spd and went with the 26.

Yes it is an S2, and aside from an SSR2 and Buell Race kit intake, rejet, it is stock. Thanks for the advise, I will go back to the 29T.

You can up-grade to the pulley with the thicker spline section but have to get a matching spacer and seal. It takes it from about 1/2" to 3/4' of spline depth. And isn't hard to do.

That sounds like a good option Eric, how and where would I get the parts to do the upgrade?

Oops, never mind, I checked the spline depth and it is the 3/4" model, which makes me wonder why it started to loosen up in the first place.
