OK, here's my latest paranoia: how much noise should the valves make? I think they are pretty noisy and it wouldn't bother me except they seemed to get louder recently. They aren't (quite) as noisy as the valves in my Commando, but that has solid lifters and a fairly racy grind. This bike is in nice condition but it looked like it sat for a long time and the oil was really dirty. The H-D dealer changed the oil when they serviced it but it looks pretty nasty after 800-1000 miles. Should I change it again? What oil filter is commonly available at auto parts stores, preferably with extra capacity? It makes a lot of interesting noises -- normal?

Are you SURE they actually changed the oil?? I bet they didn't - My dealer lied about it when I bought my bike. Change it yourself - Immediately. Chance the Primary fluid too.

That said, the bikes are normally noisy. Its really hard to say if yours is abnormally so.

I went to Napa and just asked for a Sportster filter. They had it in stock.

Thanks. I checked the oil tank after the service and I'm sure they changed the oil. The bike has just over 9000 miles.
