I'm still playing with my new 2002 M2. I thought my belt might be too tight since I'm unhappy with the ride at the rear. After a ride yesterday I had a friend who isn't quite as heavy a I am sit on the bike and I thought the belt was pretty tight. Went out and bought a socket this morning but thought I'd check it again. What I did was to prop the bike up with a block under the sidestand so it is nearly upright and then lay across the seat so that all of my weight is on the suspension. I could pull the belt up so that it just touched the swingarm with some pulling, which is what one poster recommended as "scary loose". Now I'm confused - does the belt tighten up that much when hot, and exactly how should the tension be measured. BTW, I also found that the bike had the old #6 plugs in it and I replaced them with #10s. Much better. | ||

I used to use the same method on my M2, all my weight on the bike and then reach down and push the belt up with my finger. It would go up 1" or so easy before I felt any resistance at all. When it is too tight (like adjusted to perfection as per the service manual) you can hear the belt making noise as you rode and the noise increased as the you went through dips and bumps and the swingarm moved up. The key point to me was that too loose never caused any kind of problems and the KV was full of horrorr stories about how tight or too tight eats up hard to get at and expensive to replace seals and bearings. Remove the shock [jack stands under the pegs] lift the rear wheel till the rear axle is furthest away from the drive pulley adjust the belt tension til there is no slack go riding [replace the shock first] This is how Lafayette sez to do it I like it belt has been scary loose for 8000 miles | ||

mine is so loose i can remove the rear wheel without touching the adjusters, i just pull the axle and slip the wheel out i'm not sure if thats scary or not though. | ||

The KV says to run it way loose, but if I go to loose when I am in the middle of getting the front up the belt will slip under the load. So, you can run it too loose. But mine is still loose enough to slap the swing arm driving around. 10k trouble free miles, so far. | ||

So do you do your measurements with it hot or cold? It seems to make some difference. | ||

Another vote for loose -- when on its sidestand, you can easily push the belt into the bottom of the swingarm. In fact, I have a little shiny patch right where it hits. | ||

my mechanic as well as wheel builder left it loose as a goose-no problems so far. | ||

If your belt is slipping during wheelies, it's either too loose, or something is wrong with the teeth on the belt or pulley No problem with teeth. Like I already said, contrary to popular opinion, you can run it too loose. (so it is tighter now) | ||

And you can believe I beat the snot outta mine... I have NEVER slipped the belt..sheared a tooth, BUT, the pullies are starting to show a little wear. Chase} |
