My fuel filler has been leaking, and eating the paint around it. The Factory Service Manual that came with the bike says to use "Hylomar" sealant. "Long Story Short", I got "something entirely different" from my local NAPA dealer. It seems they have an "arrangement" with Permatex to market only their products.

Regardless, I put the bike on "Reserve Fuel Supply" about 3 miles before arriving home. Grabbed the "1+" gas can, which is supposed to hold 1 gallon 4 ounces, and commenced to drain the fuel tank into it. Filled it to the brim, and still had more fuel in the tank! This thing is holding about 1.25 gallons of reserve fuel in it! That should take me another 60 miles!

Anybody else run into this situation? Do I have the wrong "Fuel Supply Valve"? I thought it was supposed to go "Reserve" at about 0.5 gallons.

Thanks,

Larry

From what I've heard, tubers all have a larger reserve, some larger than others.

I have the 5.0 gallon tank on my cyclone (I know , I ran it completely dry), but I go on reserve at 3.2 gallons

I feel that's way too much reserve... but... It doesn't bug me enough to go in and modify the tube.

A little hint from many miles of testing all over the USA.

The QUANTITY of reserve fuel is less important than you KNOWING what going on reserve means.

It doesn't matter if reserve is 10 miles or 115 miles as long as I, as PIC, know how to react.

Ride smart.

My S1W goes to reserve after I've only used 3.3 gallons - that's nearly a 2 gal reserve. When/if I end up swapping tanks, I'll probably adjust it so I have more usable fuel. I'm never more than 15 miles from a fillup here in lovely "rural" Maryland...but I am simpleminded and try to fuel as soon as I hit that switch - whether I've got 110 miles or 10 miles left.

And I'm still trying to figure a way to wire an LED warning light to the reserve switch...maybe by using an old sidestand switch?...so I have a red light on the dash when I'm on reserve. Main reason is days when I hit reserve on the way to work...have a nightmare day at work...and get on the highway before remembering to tank up. One of these days I won't remember at all...and I'll be pushing : ) Maybe I'll just get a microtoggle and flip a second switch for myself when I go to reserve...

I didn't like switching over to reserve so early on my M2 so I trimmed about 1/4" to 3/8" off the end of the pick up tube on the valve. I switch over with about half a gallon now.
