I have a 2000 m2 which I adore but i do not like the controls so I decided to fit the sportster controls. The problem i have is that the turn signals only work when I hold the switch on, if i release the switch no turn signal. If anyone has any ideas i would be grateful (i have checked the wiring diagrams for sportsters but they do not give any indication if the switches are self latching or if the latching happens elsewhere)

Might be that you need the Sportster flasher to go with the switches.

I believe you'll need what ever makes the signals self cancelling. Not sure how that works because the signals won't self cancel at stop lights, but they will if you are moving. I'm sure a Harley guy will know.

If you can get it to work, it's not a bad idea, really.

The stock control switch is self latching and the turn sigs are basic non canceling.

You will need to do a lot to make sportster controls work because I believe the signals use a special module that requires a speed input for the self canceling function to work properly. Also the sportster control switches are momentary. Lastly, the turn signal module of the sportster can also do the emergencey flasher thing by pressing both turn signal switches at the same time. I'm sure the system could be grafted on but is it really worth all the trouble and digging into the wiring harness? They are totally different systems. Buell system is simple and basic with few parts to worry about.
Just my opinion but I'm an electronics tech and I wouldn't try to do it on mine!

Yes, the Sportster turn signals use what's called a TSM (Turn Signal Module) or a TSSM (turn signal / security module). Lotsa wiring.

I think you're better off getting a retrofit kit for an "old" Harley that gives you self-cancelling turn signals, or try and find a turn signal box from an S2. My S2 uses stock Sporty hand controls and they cancel themselves, have 2 buttons, and hazard flashers.

thanks for the reply guys I knew I would get some useful information from here, I did know about the sportster turn signal unit but did not think the earlier sportster had such a unit, I am an electronics techie myself so I can wire in such a unit (but even us techies can miss the obvious at times so I thought i would check)Thanks again I'll let you know what happens

I have a '97 Dyna with self canceling turn signals. The service manual says:

"The turn signals and 4-way hazard flasher are controlled by an electronic module mounted on the electrical panel. The module contains computer chips and circuitry programmed to generate 12 VDC pulses for "flashing" the turn signal lamps."

And it goes on to describe what happens when rider signals a left turn.

"1. Pressing the left turn signal switch causes a momentary 12 VDC pulse to be sent to pin 8(in) on the module. The module responds to this signal by sending a series of 12 VDC pulses (pin 4, out) to flash left front and rear signal lamps.

2. The module monitors the number of vehicle speed pulses from the speedometer at pin 3. The pulses indicate distance traveled. When the number of pulses equals the quantity preset in the module program, the left signal is canceled.

3. Pressing the right turn signal causes a momentary 12 VDC pulse to be applied to pin 7(in) and output at pin 3(out). Thee signal process is identical to for a left turn."

There is a little more info there on the timing and distance stuff and on what the time intervals are. If you want any more of it drop me a email at jacker at midmaine dot com.

If I hold the button in I get continuous flashes until I let to of the button, then the normal timing starts. If I touch the button during a flashing cycle, it cancels it.

I'd like it to have a few more flashes on the cycles around town. Because of that I sometimes press the button and hold it for a second or two or until I need my hand for something else.

My flash cycle (per the manual) should be 5-7 seconds at speeds up to 38MPH and I am right at the 5 second minimum.
