Not too long ago joined the Buell family with an 01' X1 (so far I <3 X1). When I bought the bike it had a crack air box so replaced with a Forcewinder intake. Thinking about a louder muffler setup. I searched around these forums (which are GREAT for a new owner) but couldn't find a answer... Will the stock ECM richen the bike to match the change in the muffler given I also have the upped intake? I don't really want to change to the race ECM given my driving is in the city and use the low-end mostly anyways. Also don't want to do damage nor have my pipes glow from an extreme lean condition. Any thoughts? | ||

the "race" ecm isn't really a race piece....It gives a little more spark advance and richens up the mixture a tad. It would probably make even a stock bike run better, so I understand not wanting to spend the money but suggest you go for it. Don't forget to get the TPS reset when you do! The only thing there is to like about the stock ecm is that it came with the bike! | ||

There are add-ons like the Techlusion TFI kit that you plug into your EFI and adjust as required (with knobs - no computer needed) to correct for leanness in various rpm bands. You can't adjust the race ECM. But if you do mod your bike to make it breathe better, it's probably best to dyno tune in the process. This will point out if richening up is needed anywhere in the powerband. Then you could spring for a TFI setup to get the best results. | ||

In most cases on an otherwise stock bike, the race ECM makes a big difference. By otherwise stock I mean no motor internals changed, just a pipe and intake change. | ||

I'm pretty sure everything '99 and up is FI as far as X1's go. I have a '99 and am running pretty much what you guys are talking about. My motor is bone stock and the only mods are a K&N filter, Vance and Hines pipe and a race ecm. Filter and pipe were the first replacements, do not do this without the ecm unless you want to sound like a mobile pan of Jiffy-Pop. IMHO this setup is the way to go. I've had this setup for about six years now without an ounce of problem and city riding is no problem, but whatever you do I would change out the stock ecm. Scott in NH was right it was nice they put it on to get the bike to you after that change it! | ||

Okay, thanks guys. Think I'm getting race ECM, v&h (louder but not obnoxious) and a Vehicle Diagnostic Scan Tool so I can do the TPS reset myself and just encase anything else comes up engine code wise. I am guessing the V&H is a simple 30 minute bolt-on swap of the stock muffler, is this a pipe dream? :P | ||

That should be about right. If I remember correctly (I did this about six years and three children ago) mine had what they called a dogbone and I can't recall if it went on the top or bottom but it was tricky to get the bolts threaded into it, but once in they were a snap. I don't think you'll have any problem but I do think you will be pleasantly surprised at the weight savings. That stock muffler weighs quite a bit, would probably make a good anchor for someone. Let us know when you get it all together. | ||

Sinxityx1: Check American Sport Bike they have a PC based tool much cheaper than the factory tool. it reads codes etc... ( the lap top is more usefull any way ) I dont know what a dog bone is the ecm is secured by 2 bolts and 2 wirirng harnesses. I have a super trapp so I cant tell you My guess is 30 minutes is optimistic to change a can and brackets 1st time check to see that you have the improved front mount ( I believe that you do ) this may be the ??dog bone??. If the passenger pegs are present they can be placed on jack stands to support the rear of the bike to help change the front exhaust mount The race ecm is worth every dime you pay for it, and much better in terms of simplicity that any add on box, BTW American Sport Bike sells a tool ( for the pc ) that allows you to re map the ecm. FWIW, Unless your racing it or you have a Wild engine setup the standard race box is the best way | ||

I should have been a little clearer after I reread my post. It was clear in my head  . The dogbone is used to hold the rear of the exhaust, it is basically two threaded nuts that are connected and I believe it was about three or four inches long. It has been a long time since I have been under there. Too bad this thread wasn't a couple of weeks ago, I would have taken pics while I swapped out the shock, but alas, all good plans of mice and men... Anyway I hope your project goes well and you weren't looking for extra pieces for the ecm. I will try to locate a pic online somewhere to further complicate things | ||

Well reading my shiny new service manual it looks like 2001 has the "better" mounting system for the muffler, so looks like a pretty easy installation. Thanks Oldog, Al's at American Sport Bike has already gotten some of my money (in fact a new shipment in out for delivery here in Vegas). He's great and very helpful. This weekend looks like he'll be able to put his kids through first grade, if not college. V&H exhaust, race ecm, diagnostic tools, led taillights, frame sliders, fender eliminator. Just had a moment of squidy but rather it be with my purchases than the way I ride. | ||

Ahhh yes, doohickie, one of my favorites. That's usually reserved for something, somewhere or remotely around one of our vehicles. You know, the doohickie under the hood of the van. Kinda like that old joke about the 710 cap. Anyway...looks like someone has fun times ahead, I love putting new goodies on the bike, wish I could afford some right now. Someone hit my door in Feb. and afterwards thought instead of putting 1200+ in a 11 year old Toyota that 90 inch upgrade would have been much more fun, but oh well. | ||

Oldog, had a rocker box leak and stator issues. Want the dealership to straighten it out before I get too much into doing my own maintenance. So until I know the finances haven't purchased the tail light assembly yet. Do have the frame sliders on and tomorrow when I get the bike back I'll take a pic of it. |
