thought I had gotten my adjustments correct because the valve train ran quiet upon first heat cycle.. next day fired up for second heat cycle and possible test ride but there was too much lifter noise to ride.. I turned the adjusters 7 flats after 0 clearance per instructions.. which by the way partially opened the valve after a brief intermission I actually had to shorten the push rods to attain the barley turn by hand adjustment.. any ideas where I went wrong and is there a better procedure.. | ||

How long did you let the engine run when the lifters were noisy? It's possible the lifters bled down overnight and need to run at idle for a couple of minutes or so until they refill with oil, after which time they should be quiet. Your procedure sounds OK but, when adjusting the pushrods (lengthening), always go real slow because you are working against the hydraulic pressure inside the lifter. As you found out, this is when the valve can lift off its seat and, let's hope not, contact the piston if you move too fast. | ||

Sometimes you just need to adjust a couple of times as they settle in.You might not have had the cam lobe just right for first adjustment. | ||

had a chance to check rear today on my lunch break and found that ex push rod was just a tad loose and contacting the top of tube .. removed some material should clear now. in was tight but front is making lot of noise.. question since i made the initial adjustment that actually opened the valves slightly. bleed down time then adjusted. would this not make final adjustment too tight after lifter pump up? being that I think your trying to get the adjuster in the middle of lifter plunger travel.god its noisy and its not the sound of a bled down lifter it's coming from the rocker box.. | ||

How much lift in your cam? I had to clearance my rockerboxes when I put a high lift cam in my 1340 Evo FLH...might be rocker arm to rocker box contact? Check compression and leakdown to make sure valves are opening / closing properly.... | ||

.575 I'm sure I clearenced enough. or perhaps not.I fear the worst at this point.dont think the boss will let me work on my own bike again tomorrow. | ||

My riding buddy had to clearance the rocker boxes to the point that we thought he might be going right through. This was after he had to buy a replacement set for the ones he cracked. 565 lift, if I remember correctly. You amy have bent a pushrod in the process, too. | ||

thanks for the response i did exactly that.ran with out rocker box noise gone.. could not believe the amount that I had to remove .. I'll check push rods sunday.. |
