I put on a race air cleaner on my M2 a couple weeks ago, now I'm getting some oil splatter on my heat shield, mostly after highway riding. is this normal, or did i screw something up?

Probably from your breather hoses--are they routed into your air cleaner? If so you are getting oil mist/puke into air cleaner from them.

One more thing, the filter is cloth, if it was over oiled a bit, the spit back from the carb may be washing a bit of the oil out towards the rear of the element.
Don't ask how I know how this might be the issue.....
There "might" be a pair if jeans around here with an odd stain on the left inside knee area......

...this is why the breather hose on my S1W is run to the back...and the filter is zip-tied to the passenger peg mount (unused - solo tail) on the left side. Keeps the puke off the white wheel, LOL.

Next step, XB boxes....

In your case though, sounds normal enough. Especially at higher RPM / highway use.
