,
I've been working on my M2 in the old barn at my shop, after all was said and done, bike running and operating, I kicked up this odd little critter, in the floor, hiding under a floor jack. I don't remember seeing it before, but I don't remember a lot of things. It's possible it fell of the bike from wherever it was lodged when someone else lost it, but I can't find anything that looks like it, or any vacant holes it could have come out of. To further complicate the issue, I have been messing with Beck's blast in there too. Haven't done anything significant in there though, I did my rocker box leak, and most of the other work elsewhere. I've had the tank and the plastic under the seat off the m2, replaced a lever on the blast, but nothing rings any bells. We rode both today and nothing fell apart, but it does make one wonder. In the pic, it's sitting on a 1" scale, the wide shoulder is about 1/2" wide. Has the 3/16" hex socket. It has black paint on the end of the threads, like it came through flush with something painted. Smystry to me.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I don't recall ever seeing that fastener on my M2.

You sure it's not part of the floor jack? Never saw anything like that on my M2 either.

Did you have the gauge cluster apart? Maybe thats goes through some sort of rubber donut for vibration isolation...

It doesn't look like a Buell part though.

I'm echoing Blake and Bill, I've never seen a bolt like that on my M2 or S2's.
Maybe it is from the jack?

I don't guess it matters much now.

Although,it sounds like I could have relaxed, and quit carrying that thing around in my pocket, waiting to see whats going to fall off. We don't do any vehicular work in there, most of the junk is plumbing stuff. With the finish it had, and the 3/16 hex, and not recognizing it, I just knew it came off one of those bikes. But it could have been in some crevice somewhere, where it landed in some garage, and somebody hunted it for hours. I've lost things like that, and decided they slipped into another dimension or something.
I appreciate ya'll letting me know though, I feel better.

On another note though, as far as the M2 is concerned, it's probably a moot subject now. We had another little adventure yesterday, the bike didn't do too good, against the car. It's broke. I'll further explain, all this, I've got to try to understand a bit more about what happened. Get my thoughts in order, figure out where to post it, and tell the tale.
For the moment though, except for some kind of knee fracture, I am mostly unscathed. I'll know more when I see the orthopedic next week.

I will also go ahead and mention, my Angel deftly caught me at the moment of impact, parked me between the tracks, and hurried off to slow the train down enough so I could get up and walk away, BEFORE the train got there.
Counting my blessings.

Sorry to hear that Ed, but glad you are still here to post about it.

: ) So that bolt must have been the ABS control : )

ABS: About to Bust Something?
No it must have been in place and torqued to spec, fully functional

Now that Schwanzometer nut could be it, is that the one that reduces centripetal force? Or something to do with the aiming system?

Well maybe...............that bolt looks very similar to the ones that hold the castor's on my crawl board. You can't get much closer to the floor than that

kinda looks like the hardware that holds the clutch lever on actually, maybe bigger though...

Glad you are okay. Sounds like you had a close call. Let us know more when you can.

When I can hobble a bit better, guess I'd better check all my jacks, creeper, make sure nothing else is going to fall apart and hurt somebody, and yeah, my first thought was the clutch lever bolt. I had changed a couple of those, but not really that close when you compare them

Guess I'll sort my sad story out and put it in the Tale Section
It didn't start as an adventure, but it sure ended up that way!!!

That looks like the bolt on my floor jacks that the return spring hooks on.

Hmmm... you may be on to something... is that a side stand bolt? Like the pre-recall one?

Still looks more Harbor Freight then Buell Motor Company to me...

What do disk brake rotor bolts look like?
I'm thinking of the ones that go thru the floating pins/washer/grommet things.
I haven't had to remove one yet, thankfully.

It sure would be nice to find out that part, or any part, was what caused my mishap. I've been scrounging around in a big way trying to find SOMETHING to blame it on. Sadly, all I can guess so far is pilot error.
Nevrenuf is in town for a while, he's going to go help me pick it up at the wrecker yard tomorrow, we'll be able to look it over good then. He has an 02 M2 also, and has already parted another one out so he can look at it with more experienced eyes. Anxious to get it home.

Ed,
Interested to know what happened. Sounds like you suspect your front brake. I learned the hard way about the importance of flushing the brakes every year. I was on the interstate when a car cut me off, grabbed a hand full of front brake only to slide down the interstate on my but. Fill us in.

Picked up my banged up baby, the ins co was going to send it to some kind of free storage facility. Free didn't sound too good to me.
Neil(nevrenuf) was kind enough to go and "help" me. It takes a LOT of help when all you can do is watch. He and a guy there rolled it on the trailer. We both just stood and looked, kind of solemn like, reminded me of a "viewing" at the funeral home, except nobody said "don't he look good". Looked kind of dead to me, but thats always what I think when they say that, and try to remember not to say it. We didn't see anything that I could blame my trouble on, must have just been me. The forks are smashed back, the header's smushed, the rear brake lever is broken off (wondered if I did that sailing down the hill, stomping), there's oil all over, but the filter was busted. No telling what all else. My Corbin seat only has one little nick, don't know how, it launched like me and the tank, all in different directions. Got to get time to inspect a little closer. When Neil gets his up here we can sit them side by side and see what all is bent how much. Just waiting on the insurance man now, see what he says. Still working on time and gumption to splain all I can about what happened, kinda sketchy.
Sorry to ramble, still in the grieving stage I guess.
Mostly though, after looking it over, still feeling extremely blessed.

Bad_karma, I hadn't flushed the brakes, had it on the to do list though. I doubt I had put 400 miles on it, had more time researching and working on it than riding, which could also be a contributing factor, like: problem-panic-react-return to reason, too late, CAR!!!!!

That bolt couldn't have been for the guard on the "eject" button could it?

Hey Rotzaruck,
Sorry to hear of your unplanned getoff but glad you came out of it relatively OK.
I sort of know the feeling. My S3T had been down for a couple of years after bouncing off a large piece of trailer trash in the road. In the meantime I've been riding my new Ulysses and loving it! I just got the S3T all back in running order this week. New forks, triple-trees, front motor mount....

Yesterday a dang bicyclist pulled in front of me as I made a right turn onto a side street. I stopped and nearly got rear-ended in the process. All that work nearly lost in one day. I think I would have cried. Glad Buells have good brakes.

I hope you can get your tuber back up again soon but it sounds pretty bad. Let us know if you need parts as some of us may have a few things laying around.

I have a spare rear swingarm and a couple of other items but it sounds like most of your damage is in the front.

Rotzaruck - check out Pay It Forward. Some people are checking out their tuber parts supply. Maybe there's something there you can use.

Kristi,
thanks, I will, depending on what happens with the insurance co, adjusters coming tomorrow.

Got an interesting opinion today from a motorcycle mechanic type guy. Wondering if anybody could jump on this as an excuse. He stopped by and looked, I wasn't there, he called me, said, "I know what happened, did it just stand up in the curve?" I said "yeah", he said "you have a flat place on your rear tire, makes 'em stand right up". "But", said I , "I was going so slow, had been going faster in other curves, but slowed way down in that one, it scared me, and had a railroad on the other side". He said "yep, if you'd been going faster it probably would have laid on in there, you were going TOO slow".
That is pretty much what happened, it came up, wouldn't go back. My projected route involved a power pole and guy wire, I chose the slippery slope,(panic choices are rarely good, but occasionally better) which of course led to the train track.

What do ya'll think? Is such a thing likely, or was he just trying to make me feel better?

Never heard of that one unless he thinks you had a high-side pitch-off. Maybe he thinks you locked up the rear then let off the brake after you noticed it trying to go sideways. That is a high-side and is quite common. Even gets the pros too!
