I have an 02 M2 that is very solid 15K miles. Am longing for an S1. Should I cut my tail and change forks?? Or go to an S1 model?? I paid $2800.00 for my M2 from orginal owner. Sad to say but bought to make a Redneck Mutant but Buell has stole my heart!!

It depends on who's answering .. I have both an M2 and S1 (see profile pic) .. If I had to pick one to keep, it would be my M2 .. but it does have the X1 inverted forks. It's a 99 so it has the fatter tail, add a Corbin G&L seat for 2 up riding, still works great for solo riding. You can set the M2 up (clip-ons, rearsets, inverted forks) and have all the attributes of the S1 minus the really badass look ... depends really what you want from the bike. The S1 lacks in comfort compared to the M2 .. M2 is a torque monster, the S1 excels more up top.

For the price you paid on the M2, you could do the fork swap, and do the other little things to make if what you want and still come out ahead as far as cost goes. Me personally, I wouldn't hack it up to make it an S1... but many others have and they've looked good.

Room for a 2nd bike ? Just buy an S1 and keep the M2 .. then you get the best of everything.

Badass? Yes ... JUST as badass ... not without hacking up the tail and converting it... but still badass ...

Mine definitely isn't as badass as my S1 ... but damn fine looking scoot none-the-less ....

Ya just gotta trust yer gut !

If it's going to eat at you .. sell and buy the S1 .. or convert it like you mentioned .. plenty people here that have done it will probably be more than happy to pass along tips on the conversion. That's the nice thing about this place ... wealth of info and cumulative experience ...

When I bought my first Buell (1998 S3T), I REALLY wanted an S1W. But it just wasn't the right bike to suit my needs (comfort, touring capacity, did I mention comfort). After nearly 5 years of Buelling, I decided to get the S1W also.

Moral of the story....keep the M2. You can always get the S1 when it fits the "2 bike" budget.

That's what I did. 99 M2, first bike. Wanted an S1W but couldn't afford one. 96 FLHP, "self control" bike, learned how to ride better. Sold the M2 to keep the house (priorities). Rode the FLHP for years, finally got my S1W last year. Worth every minute of waiting...but I also brought home an S2 tonight for the same reasons Lake_bueller mentioned: comfort, storage, comfort - I'm 6'4", and as much fun as the S1W is...I couldn't ride it all day like I could my M2. Maybe I'm just older...or maybe the S1W is more "purpose-built". YMMV of course, but they all have bonuses all to themselves.

If I had to do just one? Keep the M2. Put on the inverted front end. Go clip-ons and rearsets to taste (the Buell rear sets are still available). Same for tail section. That's the best part - it's *yours* - make it into what you want. You've taken the first step - you didn't butcher it for a "chopper" : )

If you already got the M2,chop the tail and make your S1 conversion.
I own my converted M2 for about 3 years and it has all attributes that I want from a bike.

Ralph,
How hard is to change out tail sections? How much welding or cutting is needed? That is a great looking Cyclone.

I know I posted this in other threads, but you can do what I did. Just trim the rear plastic. It really "lightens" the look of the bike to make it more like an S1, but you keep the 2-up seating...and it looks badass!

S1 mod requires the subframe to be cut off and refabbed to fit the different angle and width of the new (old style) tail.

Not too tough if you know how to weld, just take your time unless you don't care if it's pretty. I had help from a friend who has a great rep as a welder, the fabbing was a combined effort.

Just pull up my profile to see how mine turned out. M2's are more reliable, I believe have more torque and most of the bugs and irritations of early models had been worked out on the 99+ model years.

Many don't like the S1 seat, I say spend more time on a bicycle and the S1 seat is just fine. I have cut the stock seat down for a bit more comfort though.

I believe you can just bolt on an earlier (97-98) M2 seat/tailpiece and tank for a slimmer, more S1 like appearance. This seems to be a popular practice with the UKBEG crowd. Check out their website for pics.

Thanks for all the info and pics. Think I will start looking for a S1 tail and seat.

Yes I did, I got it off ebay for $200, it is now the fame that is on my bike now caus eof my bowling for H-D's incident.

I used my M2 frame and modded it cause of the structure of the M2 vs the S1

I like the look of the S1 but as I'm 6'5" tall the S3/M2 modded frame gives a little better leg room than the S1 because of the lower rider peg position.

I put those crappy foot peg reallocators on my M2 to bring em close to the S1's riding po.

But now with the S1 frame I look all OG.

I am actually looking to get a set of rear sets, I love to torture myself ;)
