Hi: First time poster
My nieghbor has a 1999 M2 Cyclone for sale for what seems a good price, $2,500
Bike is in very good cond. with only 7,000 miles. has not been ridden in about 4 years. My problem is I know nothing about these bikes. From what I have read so far they have a few recalls, Suspension/Fuel and air intake. If I buy this will a dealer fix these warrenty issues for me not being the original owner.
Is it a good bike, trouble free ? I don't want to spend more time repairing than riding. I want to be able to take long rides and not worry about braking down.
I have only heard from one owner and he said all he did was repairs, love riding it but would never buy one again.
What say you

That price is a steal.

It all depends on the individual rider/bike. They do require some preventative maintenance, and have some slight issues...the most common being minor gasket leaks, most of them being inexpensive and easy fixes. Keep on top of the maintenance schedule and check the few pesky fasteners that commonly work loose, and you ought to have a happy life together.

They have had a load of recalls, but any H-D/Buell dealer should be able to take care of those regardless of how many hands it's passed through, if they haven't already been done.

If you want to keep it reliable, it's probably best to keep it relatively stock.

having had the last year they made them, they seem to have worked the majority of the kinks out of em. so outside of the gaskets needing replaced on the top end and sensor problems, there was well over 24k miles on the bike before it got totalled. i don't know why you wouldn't be able to find out if the recalls had been done on the bike or not. just as long as that bike starts up, that is a steal, none the less. and just as long as the issues are takin care of properly you will have a good bike over the long run.

I ride a 98 M2 and have had no problems at all with the bike. All recalls had been done sometime ago.
The price is a steal but I would be a little concerned about the bike sitting for the last 4 years.

Buy it, QUICKLY! Buy a service manual. Change the oil(s) (engine, primary and fork), oil filter, tyres (check on this board for suggestions - NOT stock tyres), brake fluid(s), primary shoe (to new, stronger unit) and rear isolators (if at all suspect). Battery if necessary. And ride the snot out of it.

Email me the VIN and I can see if all the recalls have been done or not (I work at a dealer). The price is a steal. My first bike was a 99 M2 and I LOVED it - the only reason I sold it was youthful lack of control - too many Driving Awards in too short a timeframe, LOL. As above, though - keep up on maintenance, get a shop manual and familiarize yourself with the terrain, and HAVE FUN

At 7000 miles, it hasn't been ridden enough for issues to really pop up .. I bought my 99 with 1700 miles on it last February ... it now has almost 8000 (would be more but I logged about 1000 on the S1 already this year) and it still has no issues .. it is a great bike .. only things I've HAD to do was replace tires, replace primary gasket and put the updated front rotor, and front exhaust mount on. The rest was all my doing. I'd say when you get closer to 20k miles- you will be due for a little work .. but these bikes are very easy to work on ... and in most cases, makes owning the bike that much better, and more fun - you won't mind working on it when you need to.

And yes .. 2500 is a steal !! If you don't buy it, send him my way - I probably would !!!

$500 and two or three pleasant and relaxed weekends and you will have a very reliable bike, a steal at that price.

Change the front exhaust mount to the new part ($100?), change the primary tensioner shoe to the new part ($25?), replace the rocker box gaskets with the new metal parts ($30), and replace the primary cover with the new metal gasket ($30). Run the belt scary loose ($free), rejet the low speed jet and add a forcewinder ($150)... and whatever normal maintenance is necessary.

At 15,000 miles, drop the oil pump (new gasket and some cable ties) and inspect the pinion gear for wear. It will probably be fine, if its not you will need another $50 part. If you feel lucky, just wait and see if the speedo sensor fails ($65 replacement). If you don't feel lucky, spend $15 on a 5v regulator to protect it and know it will last forever.

(Actually I would rearrange some of that if you get the bike... do the primary gasket change when you do the primary shoe tensioner replacement, and inspect the pinion gear and know if you have to replace it before you do the rocker box replacements).

Should you buy it? Let me put it this way... I checked your profile to see if that bike was anywhere near Lebanon Ohio before I decided to answer your question : ) : ) : )

I concur, that's a steal! I wouldn't change the rocker box gaskets unless they leak.

Buy some new intake manifold seals pretty quick too. They're only about $13 a pair, you'll likely be needin'em soon.
