All I can hope Rick, is that they get your ass back in the saddle before May 28th!

I can second his observations on the weld quality/clearances and they are both very poor. Perhaps the tech that got his swingarm got it on a friday, and finished it on a monday. Lazy on both days, makes for a terrible end result. Good luck with it Rick, and let me know what happens after the phonecall tomorrow!

I know I'm repeating myself here, but regardless of whether the welder had too much liquid refreshment or not enough sleep, and even if their model did have enough chain clearance, the fact that the nose of the brace isn't properly supported by struts, and do not intersect the shock tower tells me that this is not engineering at all - it's something done on a cocktail napkin.
There are many standards and opinions as to exact how thin the brace can be both in diameter and wall thickness, how far back it should join the main arm (farther back looks like a good idea but useless unless you suspect the axle slots - which is quite a different problem), where the struts should be, material to use, and (very big) how far down the brace should be at maximum. My opinion is that the brace should be as "deep" as possible, even if it means making a window for chain clearance between the arm and strut because the arm/strut/brace triangle is the single biggest factor.
Here's one with a deep brace to allow chain clearance.

The whole idea was to get a 1" longer swingarm, to allow me to run a geometry I prefer (rear raised 1", front lowered 1/4") while maintaining good stability, reducing "pitchiness" during hard braking/acceleration, and also putting additional weight on the front end of the bike. It suits my riding style better. I like having a firm, planted front end and letting the rear end ride (and slide) loose. Some would call that unbalanced but I've always preferred it that way. With the rear raised up using the stock wheelbase that's a bit hairy for me. The raised rear end also allows for better cornering clearance, because like a spicy young Latina woman, these things may be thin in the middle but they are thick on the bottom and need all the additional cornering clearance you can get. It's all a compromise to meet those needs.

I could use the "aluminum arc" swingarm, but it is still not an inch longer!

I really don't mind their design...it would make some sense if it had in the very least a "V" brace in the center. As it is it effectively only braces the area that was lengthened (the legs), but doesn't reinforce the pivot shaft to the legs at all. That shock arm operates on a load path that is indirect from the main section of the swingarm torsionally (I.E. that in itself doesn't need additional bracing IMO)...so I'm not overly concerned over that, though it would seem to be the logical place to anchor it!

Deep bracing is all well and good, but the deeper the brace, the stronger and more triangulated those front tie-ins need to be.

They must've read the same book as these guys:

They have no problem taking it back and re-designing it to my specs...but they shouldn't have needed my input to do the job in the first place.

Ryan, I wouldn't have my heart set on that date. I sent the 'arm back today. Hopefully it comes back soon.

...for less than $1000?

The whole, recurring theme for my bike is making the most out of the little $$ I have to spend on it

I'm pretty sure the guys at Revolution have gone apeshit on the welder and the quality assurance guy for letting that kind of work out the door.

If not, they should have. A black eye like that will take some time to disappear.

One would hope so.

Ralph, do you have a link to that manufacturer? I remember seeing those years ago, but can't find 'em online anymore.

If you need any help making contact or a translation, let me know.
I know one British distributor:

but none in the US.

Rick, has Revolution taken care of this issue yet? Keep us posted on their response and action.

The swingarm should be back in their possession. They agreed to fix it and set the brace height where ever I need it. I gave them a few suggestions and am just waiting to get it back. They seem to be pretty stand up guys...I'll give 'em another chance.

Rick,
Do you want/need a stock swingarm as a fallback? I have a steel arm from an S3 sitting in my basement. It's yours for the price of shipping it down the coast.

I appreciate the offer, but I'd rather just wait for this thing to come back to me. Ryan got his bike stolen last night so our track day plans are pretty much over.

Sorry to hear about the theft. If it turns out you need it let me know - if you don't need it I'll post it in the "Pay it Forward" section.

Hey Rick,

Really wish you would post pics of the swingarm since it was returned to you. No mistake about the first go-round but leaving the thread hanging like the issue was never resolved is not good either.

Thanks,

Brian
