So, I put a new, never used, but purchased a couple years ago D205 on my S1W. Sat overnight, flat as a pancake. I have to perform the soapy water test when I get home today, but if I have to buy a new tire...I'd just assume put a wider one like on the XB on the bike. Will it fit? IIRC the XB is a 180, and the OEM for the S1W is "only" a 170, so not much difference there...and I was too busy being pissed this morning to look at belt clearances and stuff.... | ||

A 180 will fit but you may feel a difference in handling. I changed wheels from stock cast to spun PMs with a180 on it. No problems with clearance but didnt "drop in" the same on corners. | ||

Wile I use an Avon with a peaked carcass and that gets around the turn in problem. Joe | ||

Right now I'm running Dunlops. Have a brand new but been on a shelf for a while (i.e. paid for long ago) D205 rear, but it has a hole in it. If Dunlop isn't able to help me and we can't sneak it thru on a warranty / defect claim thru work, I'll probably switch. Also in stock at work we have a D207 170; some XB 208s and some XB Pirellis. If I switch I may go Pirellis, I've heard good things about them so far. Thing is, our Sportfest event (with Battletrax-type event) is in one week and I want / need to have shoes on the beast as soon as possible so I can start scuffing! | ||

Manufacturers will state what tire sizes are optimum for your wheel size. Generally, a 180 is for a 5.5" wide rim, and a 170 is for a 5" wide rim. You can put a 180 on a 5" wide rim, but the profile may be compromised. Some riders notice a difference, some don't. PM rear wheels on tubers are 5.5" wide. Stock three spoke tuber rear wheels are 5" wide. I prefer staying with a 170 on my 5" wide rim - I tried a 180 and there was no advantage either in performance or appearance. | ||

My main reason for considering the switch is time constraints. We have XB stuff in stock. Although finding the tuber 207 on the shelf helps me out...but I have to change out the (also newly-mounted) front tire so I have the same front and rear....grr, more work. | ||

Well, scored a sympathetic deal on a set of 208s. Mounted, balanced, cleaned and ready to start scuffin' on the morning commute. And these *hold air*, unlike the first one...  | ||

The Pirelli XB tires are the best street tires from Buell. I haven't used Dunlops in years. Their race tires are great but I've always found their street tires lacking against the competition. |
