I am going to start collecting parts for a DIY turbo project.

What carb would be a good choice for a blow-thru setup? I was thinking about getting a Mikuni 42 since I can use it now and if it will work, when turbocharged.

Discuss...

Looks like I could use the stock CV carb. Any turbo guys with insight as to how to make the carb pressure ready?

I am planning on buying a holley red fuel pump. Any thoughts?

CV carbs work with engine vacuum.
If you pressurize the intake, there will be no vacuum.
Most of the turbo setups that I saw had the carb outside of the turbo.

if your going to turbo, use a draw thru.a lot less headache. a good carb is a zentih/bendix with adjustable main jet. a LOT easier to tune than a mikuni. you would have better luck rejetting your cv carb. i hate those mikunis. Firemanjim Has a turbo on his buell and is pretty knowledgeable. Get his opinion

I would prefer not using a draw through set up. I don't want gas running though the turbo, and I plan on using an intercooler. There could be a chance for gas to sit in intercooler also.

I searched the archives and it looks like FMJ has a mikuni, but at some point thought of ditching it for a CV.

Thanks for the input.

Anybody out there with turbos have experience with fuelling the buell?

You may want to look at the RB Racing website. <www.rbracing-rsr.com> Hit the Products tab and run down to Evolution Sportster turbochargers.
The commentary is full of opinions based on the owner's decades of experience, covers draw-thru/blow-thru and intercoolers. Funny read. He hogs out Aerochargers pretty bad for their real and perceived faults. I have an Aerocharger set-up on an S2 that has worked fine and lasted a long time, but if I wanted to go really fast I would probably cobble together something with stout aftermarket cases like the forthcoming STD Development 5 speed cases with the windage tray that they say will be available in a few months. Consider an extended swingarm.

My Aerocharger has a Mikuni that has been modified to work when pressurized - both by the turbo and the fuel pump. I actually don't know what has been done to effect these mods, but the people at Mikuni America in Northridge CA are usually more than willing to help out with answers to questions like that.
The First Choiceâ„¢ Turbo kits that used to be available usually included a modified Mikuni and a fuel pump set-up as part of the system. (If I'm recalling that right)

FMJ and Skeeter Todd (the guy that built my RS) have probably forgotten more about these things than I will ever know - so I don't claim to be of too much help.

By the way, there is a turbo'd M2 on ebay right now.

Thanks Moxnix. I have read through that website several times before. You are right, there is a lot of good info on that page. Not a lot of info for my carb questions. He is really pushing fuel injection. Definitely the best option, but I don't have the $ for the best. Just some good fun!

I thought about looking for a used aerocharger kit, but I think the turbo is undersized for the bike. The bikes that are running higher boost don't see much gains and are probably just overspinning the turbo and really heating up the air. I think they did it for quick spool but if you look at the dyno charts the torque drops way off and the HP starts to go really flat above 5000rpm. Really choking the motor.

Well, I guess I am just going to start collecting parts and keep researching how to feed fuel to the beast. It might be awhile, but stay tuned...

That's probably the smartest thing to do!

I did see the turbo'd M2 on ebay...looked a little rough. Might be cheaper to buy it, fix, and sell my M2, BUT it wouldn't be as fun (or challenging).

Most of the setups I've seen on dragbikes/landspeed racers are draw thru's with S&S carbs. I don't know much about 'em but they are supposed to be much easier to tune than a blow-thru for carbureted applications. Seems the fuel injected guys prefer the blow thru's.

Go blow through, sent you a PM with more detail.Draw through is old school stuff. Aerocharger set-up for the Buell was originally for a stock S-2 so was a bit small---but that said I made 177 HP on an 88" bike with it and on the 1250 it was at 155. And there are alot of different sized Aerochargers out there. They fitted them to Big Twins, Triumphs, and tons of snowmobiles.I found a larger one on a snowmobile forum. Be prepared to pay around 1000.00 for a good one. Advantages of Aerocharger is self-contained oil system, and variable vanes for fast spooling and no wastegate required. Be careful of plain bearing turbos as they need more oil pressure than Buell supplies, need a ball bearing type. Then you need to make sure turbo is mounted so oil drains out to crankcase or you will need a scavenge pump.
The CV carbs can work, just need proper set-up,I have a set of Mikuni CV's on my son's turbo Yamaha.

Check out www.dragbike.com and
www.suzukihayabusa.org for their tubo forums, also www.turbomustangs.com as they have lots of blow through stuff.

Leinweber has a Sportster/Buell turbo cam grind for the Aerocharger that appeared (to me) to be worthwhile. Intercoolers usually were not part of the original kit for Buells but did come with the big twin kits. Cooler is better. A (British) Aquamist pump set-up will likely make a difference on keeping pistons from melting in prolonged high performance mode, but it's like a $500 item.

I responded back to your PM before I read this, so that pretty much answers my turbo question. I guess I'll start checking out the snowmobile forums for used turbos.

Determined to have turbocharged Buell...

There are a bunch of ball bearing turbos out there,Garrett makes a bunch and I have an IHI-4 that is ball bearing--off a Subaru IIRC.
That air pump supercharger is total crap, just like the electric ones.

Crap? Certainly, but cheap.

Or as the Maxton M/PF 1350 record holder once offered up: Fast. Reliable. Cheap. Pick two.

Jim, do you know a good source for a wastegate? the American turbo pack on my yamaha 1100 is having wastegate issues

Tom,there are a bazillion cheap ones on eBay,or you can stick with a name brand one like Tial or Innovative.Just depends on how much money you want to spend. Racebike is getting a Tial.

First Choice did supply small Aerocharger turbos. They sized the turbos for Sportsters and a red line of 5000 rpms. When the Buell came out they did'nt bother to get bigger ones. Lienweber will make you cams you'll have to wait two to three years , I have a set but never used them, stock "D"s work well. A CV carb will not work blow through. Mikuni flatslides are good. Be careful with used Aerochargers they can be damaged very easily .Turbo Doc sells new ones. I can't get the power that FMJ sees but I think my bike runs very good.
