This is a continuation of my other thread, what started as a starter problem evoled. Here it is, sunday went to start bike choked it and it wouldnt fire up, so I twisted throttle 2times still no go, so I let it air out an hour thinking maybe its flooded still no go. Went out to try again and now this time it wont even turn over unless I pull in the clutch, the neutral light is still coming on bikes in neutral but wont crank unless I pull in the clutch and still wont fire. One thing I noticed is no red lights come on when ignition switch is turned on. Can any body help me as to where I should start to look, i checked fuses I have spark it didnt look big but definately sparking, and I have fuel.

aging batteries will cause a number of symptoms -- check the conenctions (specially ground) as a first step

Make sure you have throttle idle set to fast idle.will not start sitting long time storage on low idle.

When was the last time you replaced the plugs? Where they properly gapped? If the bike is turning but not firing, it's most likely the plugs.

If it does nothing...neutral switch or side stand switch.

Motors turning not firing, plugs and wires were gapped and installed late last summer, started the bike up a month ago and sat night before the sunday it wouldnt start. I saw spark not huge but definately there and smell gas and can see gas when throttle is pumped. I have the battery tender on and a green light so there should be plenty of power

The green light on the battery tender means the battery has taken all the charge it can, not all that it should. A bad batt. might get a green light in just a few minutes.

Ok I cleaned the plugs and she fired upI spose the plugs were fouled from the short run the night before.Im going to get a new battery anyway cause Im sure I could use one. But still the bike wont turn over unless the clutch is in, it will run with the clutch out but not with the kickstand down the clutch has to be in to stay running even with green neutral light. Would the neutral safety or the kickstand be the suspect?

Kickstand switch will kill the motor like you say. Have your dealer run for open recalls - maybe you can get it for free.

And the fouled plugs goes to prove the rule - if you start it, RIDE it for at least 30 minutes. Making the "vroom vroom" noise in the garage and then shutting it off is about the worst thing you can do to a bike. I've been trying to beat that into my Harley-buying customers for years now....

If it was the kickstand switch wouldnt it kill every time I let out the clutch? It only kills if I let out the clutch with the kickstand down.

I got mine(same as yours) ready to ride a little while back. I thought. I had just put a new clutch perch on, and realized the switch on it had been disconnected, and hooked it back up. Got it outside, all excited, trying to ride a bit before it started raining again. Got it warmed up, put in gear, let the clutch out and it died. Messed with the switch on the clutch lever, cause I had just put it on, couldn't find anything wrong, then started trying to get the stand switch connector loose to jump it. Couldn't get it loose in a reasonable amt of time, knew the rain was coming. Cut the wires between the switch and the connectors, put them together with a wire nut, fixed it.Rode just fine, right back into the garage to get out of the pouring rain. Now I've got to get a switch back on it, that first left turn is SOOO exciting for us forgetful types.
By the way, I don't know if it's supposed to or not, but I don't have any red light when I turn my switch on either.

There are diodes in the fuse box as well if one is faulty say the N switch theres the issue,

the bike should turn over if in neutral reguardless of the state of the clutch or stand switches.

IN gear start, clutch pulled in

motor running, clutch out the stand switch must make.


the diodes are the black fuse shaped gizmoes in the fuse box.

all of these operate a relay under the seat in the fuse box for the starter or ignition. }

It happens to me every spring. The bike will start one or two times. And then nothing. I'm sure it has something to do with moisture and sitting for months.

You're right. Re-reading the posts (while awake, what a difference), it sounds more like the N safety switch. It thinks its in gear, and if you let out the clutch with the stand down, it kills the motor. Try pulling the connector off the NSS and cleaning/greasing the contacts; maybe give 'em a pinch so they grab better. See if that gets you thru the first couple rides of spring : )

Is the neutral safety and the green neutral light read off the same sensor, cause I am getting the neutral light

Man, I'm glad you got that sorted out, I was sitting here, with my book in my lap, trying to sort these diagrams out---it was making my headache hurt!!! The really neat thing is, I learn something when I have trouble AND when everybody else does, thanks to the amazing amount of hard earned knowledge so freely shared here.
