I have been searching the forums and reading through the KV about leaking fork tubes...I have looked at the service manual...is replacing the seals (bushings??) a job that can be done by someone that has never done them before?? I like doing my own stuff, but I get nervous when I don't have some guidance... Those of you that have done it, how hard was it?? Would it be better to romeove the forks and take them in to have them rebuilt?? Also, what should I use to clean off the fork oil from the brake?? Do I need to replace the brake pads?? rotor?? or can I just clean them with something and be good?? Thanks for the help Jason | ||

Its easy you can do it. I posted a detailed desctiption and Windward added some great stuff on the XB bikes if you have an XB some tools may be needed On the brake I dont know for sure, my guess would be brake clean on the disk, remove and inspect the pads maybe brake clean and sand them here YMMV My 0.02$ If after inspection I was uncomfortable with it, pads are cheaper than broken bike and bones. | ||

Essthreetee, I've been doing it on motocross bikes for years and my S1 once. It is a fairly easy job best done with the fork legs removed from the bike. No special tools required for mine. The first one may take awhile but after that you'll realize how easy it is. A clean work surface is a must. Search for Oldogs thread and I'm sure you'll be fine. Once oil hits the brake pads they're impregnated. Use brake cleaner for the rotor and caliper and new pads. | ||

Thanks for the replies guys. I will try to find Oldog's thread, and good advice about the pads...I figured as much, but just thought I would try???? Oldog, do you have any idea what the title of the thread was?? Or what was in the subject?? to make searching a little easier... Jason | ||

So I just got done replacing seals and bushings on both forks...I cannot believe how simple the process actually is once you have done it. I made a tool with 1-1/2" PVC, sliced down the middle with hose clamps...heated up the outer with a heat gun and in went the seals...EASY. only thing is...NOW I have a new noise...shrr, shrr, shrr...I thought maybe new brake pads, but it doesn;t change when brakes are applied. Any ideas??? What should I be looking for when I take the wheel back off??? Thanks for all of the help, I love doing my own stuff...gives me such a feeling of accomplishment. jason | ||

Jason, make sure your fender's not rubbing on the tire. That could be the noise you're hearing. rt | ||

as I'm sure you know, the location of noises can be tough to determine -- I'd tell you about the fella that r&red his front wheel bearings, made new wheel spaces to EXACTLY center his front wheel in the caliper, rebuilt the caliper, stood on his head and spit wooden nickles, only to find that his sprocket nut had come about 1/64th inch loose, which was, of course, the source of the noise -- except he'd be WAY too red in the face to mention it make SURE you're lookin in the right place | ||

FOUND IT!!!!! It is the tin brake pad hold down thingy(technical term)...I replaced the Nissin pads with EBC and the Tabs on the ends are about 1/8" shorter on the EBC than the Nissin. So the little tin thingy rubs on the rotor...I guess it will just wear away and then be good... So it looks like tomorrow I ride!!! YEEEHAAAWWW Thanks all.
