Just thought I'd share with you guys my purchase of an ill-fated Limited Edition Red Stripe X1. Well...to make a long story short...well shorter...I'm riding a '94 Katana 750(which is currently up for sale) when my brother(whom I bought said Katana from) show up with a '99 X1...and I'm like what the heck is that? It was the coolest bike I'd ever seen...I'm really a naked bike kinda guy...anyhow that night I start fumbling around the internet and ran across a 2000 red stripe limited edition...number 628. I always thought racing stripes on a bike was like the guy who owned it was trying too hard to impress everyone...so when I found out that it was a factory paint job...I had to have it! It was on cycletrader and was listed by a shop in NC (I'm in FL) 3400 miles for $5500. I paid like $300 and they delivered it to my doorstep...it was beautiful. One day I had it parked next to my brothers X1 and noticed that the forks were different (mine didn't have the adjusters on the lower assembly...I think they're S1/S3 forks...anyone know what a set is worth in excellent condition with tripple trees? I need to sell them!) well that got me looking closely at my bike...bad news...the bike had been wrecked and the fairings had patch jobs on them. I went down to my local HD and ordered a complete new set ($750) and ordered misc things that weren't on the bike like the correct mirrors and a rear fender. A couple of weeks after getting the bike looking top-notch...I come home and find that one of my other bikes had been tampered with (I lived in an apartment at the time) so I park my X1 and go in and call the police...while I'm talking to the dispatch the kids (who had parked in the next parking spot) had got in their car and were leaving...so I run out to see what's going on and on of the punks gets out and kicks my brother's X1 over and knocks my X1 over (he had a cover on his so it didn't get damaged) I leave the bike where it lay and called my insurance company. The next day they were out and cut me a check for $4300...they had counted stuff that I hadn't even noticed...so actually I'm doing pretty good now...a couple of hundred bucks to fix the few parts that I had noticed and for around $1500 I've got an X1! So I'm enjoying the hell out of my bike when the front mount of my V&H SSR pipe comes un@ssed and while I'm examining that I noticed that the header had a crack at the O2 mount...so I outfitted her with a Buell pro race kit. Then I take her in to see if all of the recalls had been done...they had all but one. The front mount to the rear suspension needed to be replaced...that's when I got the call...(really bad news) you need to come down here was all they said. The mounting hole in the engine case had been cracked wide open...so the engine had to be rebuilt. It took me about a month to tear the bike down to the frame and dismantle the engine...I got all the way to the jugs and cases (the cases have bearings that are pressed in so I couldn't take that apart) then they told me for about $200 they could put it back together and warranty it for a year...so the whole rebuild cost me around $1400. Three or four months later (I couldn't resist polishing the swing arm and tail section while it was apart) and she's the prettiest X1 around...and I've owned her for about five years now...although I would like to know if the original owner is still alive...I figure the bike was either endo'd or sandwich'd (has a clear title)Well... I just wanted to share my story...I think it's really cool to hear about a Buell that wasn't ripped apart for some dumb@ss chopper project and made it back to the stomping grounds!

I've polished the pipe since that picture...what a pain it was! But it's really pretty!
My Bike...Number 628
