Timn
Add to the list a blown rear cylinder oiling down I64 east. Probably a problem from washing by the fuel injection I just removed. Will get a compression tester with the smaller 12mm opening and see which cylinder it is then get started on sleeves and piston. Shes bad. But 3200 RPM 75 mph with the baker six speed was nice.

I love my 98 S3 too. But I don't need it. It's like a sedan. It's just too dependable and comfortable. Not like my Firebolt or S1 Lightning. Now those are bikes that light my fire.

Did I say I didn't need it? I sure don't want to have to pay insurance on a bike I don't really need. And what am I going to do with those deep black saddlebags and luggage rack that are just perfect to go touring at a moment's notice? (I'm thinking back on the All-California-BRAG ride; that was perfect. Thanks Leslie!). For what then, to go to work 5 miles away? Nah, the Firebolt's perfect for that. And the Lightning is perfect for those Saturday mornings to hang out with the hot rod set at the local coffee shop.

Anyway, I love my 98 S3 for what my Firebolt and Lightning is not. It's perfection, but at what price?

Yeah, my '99 S3 sucks. It has only taken me to New England, Newfoundland, Colorado twice, Arizona and too numerous locations around the midwest.
It now has 60,000mi on it and has died 3 times out on the road. Two were failed side stand switches that I fixed in about 5 minutes but the third was a stator failure that luckily stopped me 7mi. from home.
My biggest gripe is that they can't make paint last longer than 7 years on a bike that sits out in the sun all day the 100 or so days that I ride it to work.
So what am I doing with it? Repainting it of course and still riding it.

Tim, one piece of advice: ride an S3T. Each Buell model has a different ride. I thought for sure I needed an S3T. Test rode all the different tube frames, found out the M2 was for me. Once you know which bike you like riding, then go after the model year specifics. '02 has the most factory updates, followed in descending order, generally speaking. Not a big deal, but the older the bike, the more stuff you'll have to update, if it hasn't been done. I'd still go for the carb myself. Just my .02.

Had a '98 for about a year. Loved it. I've had a '99 for two and a half now, and has always seemed to be a little out of whack. The '98 for carbed and '02 seems to be the best advice.

ED- is that the Zero Gravity +3 Screen? It looks bigger than others I've seen - or maybe I'm just seeing it from different angles. Does it do a good job? How do you like it?

Thanks!

Its the Pro-Series supertrapp. I like it for the most part, though the retention screw for the internal baffle failed effectively plugging the exhaust and leaving me scratching my head for a day or two until I figured it out. LOL

Thanks for the info. That's the best pic of the Zero Gravity +3 I've seen and really shows the profile. Now I know that's what I want. I just might order it today.

Your bike looks cleaner than mine which has a few scuffs left by the previous owner. The blue frame looks awesome with the silver body work...

Howdy! Say Edward, what brand of luggage rack / backrest is that? Where could I find one? I am thinking of getting the Ventura rack and pack system, but it will not work as a backrest for my wife. I am also getting a custom built touring seat by Rick Mayer.
Does the extra 3 inches on the screen cause the wind to buffet your helmet, and cause extra noise? Or is it more comfortable than stock?
Sweet Bike you have!

Home made. It,s about 1980 BMW rear deck rack got at a swop meet.Back cushion is from a junk yard,1984 Subaru head rest. All made to fit by me.So be creative. thanks Niaud Your bike is also very Buelltiful.Ed PS you wont even feel any difference. Also the extra 3" makes for abufetless enjoyable ride even in high winds

Good job Ed, on making the luggage rack. I have been considering doing something similar. I will go for a taller screen too!
Cheers, Patrice

Did your S3 come with the black primary chain inspection plate?

Howdy Bad,
As far as I know the black inspection plate is stock. The bike only had 2200 miles on it when I purchased it.
I had a bad TPS, and a leaky rockerbox gasket, all is well now and it runs great!
Cheers

Hi Ed,
Man your bike is sweet, the polished swingarm is a nice touch.
Say, how do you post such large photos?
I get a message that they have to be under 700 pixels and 70K?
Thanks!

Ed, Cool!
Yesterday a few of us local buellies did the TX hill country, we did about 250 miles, and topped it off with BBQ!
I use a sheep skin on the seat to help with my wife's comfort. However, our custom built Chris Mayer saddle is due to be built this March , so no more sheep. We will then do a ride to Big Bend National Park April 13-16th.
