My '96 S1 has always had a bit of an oil leak at the bottom of the tank, but it has gotten far to bad to ignore. I took the tank out and found that it was not sealed at any point where a hose comes in or out. Has anyone tried using some kind of silicone sealant? Or maybe one of these:

It seems silly to spend so much money on a new tank when there is nothing wrong with the tank itself, but with the $2 rubber fittings. Great design!

(Yes I searched for this topic and got a lot of hits saying, "Buy a new tank," but some of us need less expensive alternatives!)

Go find a lawn mower repair shop. Those pesky grommets are actually gas tank mounts.

Replaced mine due to leaks some time back.

Did you use any kind of sealant when you replaced the grommets? And it stopped the leak?

I think my tank is getting pressurized. Is this fairly normal, or would that mean that I've got a piston ring or gasket problem somewhere?

The new grommets will seal good by themselves. They will be nice and pliable. The old ones(leakers) are gonna feel rock hard. The barbed fittings are going to feel like they do not want to fit. Just put a little oil on the grommet and keep good pressure on it. it will feel like it snaps into place.
