I installed the Hi4 ignition in my '00 M2, which bypasses the ecm and uses a standalone ignition module in the nose cone.

If I add a factory tach kit, will it work without the ECM? Or is the tach dependent on the ECM being in the loop?

The Crane Hi-4 has it's own tach output, pink wire IIRC.It can also use the stock VOES switch.

Joe,

I put these up for some one a while back, they are still there. They are the install instructions for the Buell tach kit for the M2, they may help you. Save the images from the link and print them letter sized, they won't be legible if you look at them from the link.

If I remember right, the wire in the M2 harness that had the tach signal was a pink wire too. Maybe you can pick that wire up and use it with the new ECM.

Good luck with it,

Jack

I added the factory kit to my 2000 M2 and just had to insert the wires from the harness on the tach into the existing connector and that was it on the wiring.

The leads from the tach in the kit already had the contacts crimped on, I just had to make sure I got them inserted into the right cavities in the connector.

Worst case, you can get the crimp on contacts from a H-D dealer or an electronics supply house and put them on the wires yourself.

The manual for my FXD has a lot of detail on the different makes of connectors (AMP, Deutsch, etc.), the models and part numbers, and the procedures for working on them.
