i'm looking at getting some copper exhaust wrap for the headers on my 98 m2... i was curious to see if anyone else has done this and what they recommend. i am going to get it in copper color (found 2"x50' on jegs for $45) and needed to know what type of straps i would need (if at all) and if i need to get the adhesive or cover spray for them. this is my first time ever using exhaust wrap so i wanted some input from people with more experience on wrapping it and/or the wear of it as well.... my other question is if anyone has found a good variety of after market mirrors or home made ones. the stock mirrors aren't too attractive and im having a hard time finding some good ones for it. i used radiator hose clamps, they seem to hold tighter than the small clamps that comes with the kit. my wrap was white&i sprayed it with the black coating i bought from autozone. smokes like hell when you first crank it up but ended up looking great.MIRRORS--- look on ebay for bicycle mirrors.they will fit in your handle bar ends. cheap &look great.or check your local bicycle shop. | ||

My experience with wrap. Yes the spray on protector is necessary. The clips work better if you apply the wrap wet. Wet wrap goes on tighter therefore the clip will pull up tighter. Blake reckoned putting on the wrap dry was easy. That was not my experience as it is nowhere near as workable, especially on the bends. I cut off my required (measured) length and placed it in a bucket of water from where I kept it dangling from whilst I worked it onto the pipe. The clips are expensive bought in packs of four - like £12 (over $20) but I found a place that sold 4 inch ones for 80p and 8 inch ones for £1. I bought more than I needed just in case, and it was a good idea because I soon discovered a better way of using them. Double or even triple them up. Three things to remember. Overlap the wrap at the ends to cover the end. Spray the wrapped headers before you put it back on the bike. It goes tighter when the stuff gets hot and dries out for the first time.  Rocket | ||

Ditto on what Rocket said,though I used gear clamps on mine.The only thing I found is not to wrap the header to close to the exhaust clamps,its hard to get the nuts by the wrap onto the exhaust port studs. Shawn  | ||

  These are European knock-offs of the CRG's. Half the price, though not as nice.ie: well made I really like the wrap and it holds up well.This is 2 yrs worth.I need to spray it again.  | ||

> check your local bicycle shop I'll second that! Bicycle mirrors are much cheaper ($10-$15), and you won't hate yourself as much when you drop your bike and scrape one off. Bar end mirrors don't survive even minor accidents. I have the CRG bar ends on my S1. They work and look great! Well worth the money in my opinion. Be real carefull when you tighten the knockoff CRG's, my friend has a pair on his S1 and they both have broken within a year. Hodakaguy | ||

I have the wrap with the stainless clamps that are usually sold in speed shops. I put it on dry although I'm told it will wrap tighter if put on wet. I didn't use the silicone spray and my wrap is over a year old.Look on E bay for the bar end mirrors on the yellow X9S. They are plastic but work great unless you are riding with a very heavy pair of winter gloves. | ||

I wouldn't advise on the 1 inch wrap, but only because I think 2 inch looks better and it offers a better overlap. Rocket | ||

How much of the 2" wrap would I need to do my header?? (2002 S3T). Also is there a brand that is better?? Looking at Summit they have their own brand for $31 per 50ft roll...however the temp rating is only at 1250* vs DEI is $42 per 50ft roll but has a temp rating of 2000*. | ||

A 50 ft roll will be ample if you don't make a mistake and cut more than one length too short. If memory serves, each header length takes about 13 feet, and a slightly shorter length if you go from the collector area to the muffler but this is going around both headers at the collector end so it's not that much shorter. Of course, this all depends on what overlap you make. Either way, you get to make only one mistake using my estimates, lol, so don't! There is a guide chart on the backing card that the DEI wrap comes with, which I found to be spot on. Rocket | ||

thanks for all the replies ill probably be ordering the wrap sometime tomorrow since i will be off and have the chance too... as for Eshardball 'Look on E bay for the bar end mirrors on the yellow X9S. They are plastic but work great unless you are riding with a very heavy pair of winter gloves.' i tried to check for those mirrors... would you happen to have a link right too them?... also dont think ill be needing the winter gloves anytime soon..... this winter the temp dropped all the way down to 60 degrees F for all of half a day... haha | ||

Ordered mine this afternoon from jegs.... 2" and the cover spray... looks like ill be riding the bike more often now as my truck seems to be quitting on me. so ill need to do more upgrades so everything works out well for me.... ill be ordering the oilbreather kit from Arlen Ness. but im looking for a good intake any ideas in a lower price range?...... i like the Forcewinder but right now i find it hard to shell out 200 for the basic one..... my pops found one for like 80 on ebay but i cant seem to find it anymore... my luck...... thanks again for all the help Phil | ||

Aight..... so i wraped em today.. but my question now is do i run the bike with jsut the wrap first then take em off again and spray em... or wait till they dry then spray them and then burn it in? ..... simple question i guess but no clue what i should do first........... Phil | ||

I sprayed mine after the wrap dried then put it on and ran the bike.You will need ventilation as the smoke is plentyful.Did mine in the summer, it did smoke a little for awhile. Shawn | ||

Thanks ill wait for it to dry then spray .... found out i needed a new rubber bushing anyways so wont be til next week... but dont have a problem with snow or too cold out here.... South florida.... mainly just humidity...... | ||

Yes that does look pretty spiffing. Very neat too. I purposely was in mind not to make mine be absolutely perfect coz I reckoned a racer would wrap it but a customizer would make a work of art of it. Do you work in an orthopedic clinic by chance Joe, lol? Rocket | ||

Cbrxxblackbird .... my reason was to cut down on heat on my legs really.... and i like the way it looks...... i ride in south florida usually in shorts and it can get pretty hot on my legs.... hopefully it cuts down on the heat good enough..... No Rocket I'm a coal miner!  My main reason for wrapping was to cover up all the welds in my XB to S3/S1 custom headers. Originally I wanted to ceramic coat them but could'nt get them pretty enough so wrapping was the only option. Thanks for the compliments guys  | ||

Hot gases exit faster than cold given all other things equal, less heat near the intake equals cold charge more power and less heat on the legs is always good. My guesses. Joe |
