Is there anything else I should do/check while I am changing the gasket?? What all gaskets do I need to get to do the job?? Thanks | ||

well you need new gasket for the derby cover and primary gasket. Not to mention your starter gasket  Also, Get some sensor safe RTV sealent and pull the plug on your stator wires. Give the grove in the plug a generous helping of RTV and re-install. This will be a preventative measure for future leaks. Also check your primary shoe while you are in there... | ||

You will have to get in from the primary side so you will need a primary gasket (make sure you get the good new metal kind). I wouldn't hurt to check out the stator's wires to make sure they aren't chafing on that little metal retaining tab. | ||

Thanks for the tips...how do I check the shoe?? Are the steps in the Service Manual?? What exactly would I be checking for?? Sorry for sounding so ignorant, this will actually be my first trip inside a Primary...I have changed the fluids, but never pulled the cover... Thanks again | ||

There is a piece of sheet metal holding the wires back. Just bend the metal a little back from the wires. This is where some RTV may com ein handy, I put some in-between the wires and metal so it didn't chafe... | ||

Essthree: If you bike has the old paper gasket you may want to get some permatex gasket remover to help get all the bits and pieces that may stick to the case or cover. The oil seal for the shifter shaft should be replaced too. When you go to put the primary cover back on, you will want to put a few layers of transparent tape over the shaft splines to protect the seal from damage. I also have a few threaded studs which I made from bolts with the heads cut off to help locate the primary gasket in place and help guide the primary cover on. There are a few dowel locators to positively locate the primary cover to the case. Sometimes they fall out when you remove the cover and roll on the floor. Be careful to make sure you find them if they fall out and put them back before assembly. If for some reason you decide to replace your primary tensioner, double check that you have it oriented correctly before bolting everything together. I like to put a thin coat of hylomar on the primary gasket. It has worked well for me although I doubt that it is necessary. Mark | ||

Jason, just some FYI. This past summer I also had a starter gasket leak and when inspecting the primary I found the starter bolts a full turn and a half loose. I found out to replace the starter gasket you have to pull the starter all the way out and that means pulling the header also as there is insufficient clearence if you don't. I dreaded that on my full faired M2 so I tightened the starter bolts and took a chance and buttoned it back up with the previous suggestions stated here and lucked out, the leak is gone and I probably saved having to replace a starter drive.
