First of all let's get this straight from the off. This Buell of mine is not a pristine condition polished to death work of art. It gets ridden. If it rains I don't care. I get wet. So does the Buell. Yes she gets cleaned but I don't sit there with Solvol polishing it to death. This Buell also gets ridden hard at times. It would be fair to say she doesn't have an easy life living with me, but she gets everything she needs and more. Glad we got that outta the way

So Henrik, not sure I understand the lingo. I like the crankcase breather exiting at the rear end. Reminds me of old flat trackers and Triumphs. I've never been a huge fan of the choice of filter I went for, but it's the only one with a base plate with a mounting hole I've come across, which makes life easy. I've actually just acquired a snazzy new little filter, much neater than the one on the Buell now, so I need to think up a new mounting idea and probably make up a new number (tag) plate at the same time. Yes I make my own, which are not road legal. What does 'tugged in look' mean? .

Big BB, thanks. Glad you like the bling, lol.

Mick, painting the tank turned into a nightmare for my painter friend. Yes it needs special prep and paint with it being plastic.

Hans, thank you kindly. It's a great compliment coming from a gentleman such as your good self. Sir, you have fine taste!

Blake, the sprocket doesn't bother me. But you have a nice front one I would like Might make me cut down the gear case if I had me one of them puppies. I have looked at wave discs too. Maybe in the future. Nope the upper carbon fiber shield is a nice cover up from looking into what's above the battery area. It's staying.

I agree about the filter. The ham can is so ugly I can't believe I once liked it. I still think I'm better off with the oval shaped Forcewinder filter though (which is what I meant before - not the ham can). This monster size round one only just fits! As for the header wrap. If you soak it then apply it, it tightens up more when you fire the motor up. You must be a patient man to wrap it on dry. Wet is so much more easier.

Lake, nice to hear such. My heads are painted in 'two pack' and have remained the same colour. The paint is a little brittle and can chip fairly easy if you're clumsy around it, so I try not to be. I also have a tin of touch up just in case. I see you went for the Buell traditional colours with you heads!

Trust you Capt! Thanks for the kind words too. Sail yours over here and I'll rebuild it for you. You take me fishing?

Reep, Big D, Spider, Old, DaveG, Cereal, R_t, thanks too to you guys. It means a lot coming from all of you.

Do I want a better camera? What, so's you lot can see the imperfections, lol.

Those are not imperfections, thats character!

I used braid covered vent line, and like it! it looks finished

I am taking an aluminum flash light body and making a top from billit using simple tools, I like a lot of the touches you have made to your bike the heads on the engine are a big one

the X1 heads are Black but the rocker boxes could be painted...

Nice bike Rocket. Since we are on the subject of BadAss S1s, here's my contribution:

Sean, Dennis,

Your custom painted cylinder heads look great. I'm wondering though what the emissivity (heat radiating efficiency) of the paint might be compared to the factory finish. A significantly lower emissivity could easily elevate the cylinder head temperature. In general, shiny surfaces have lower emissivities and lighter colors tend to have lower emissivities, though not always.

Sean,
My clean looking front sprocket is just an aluminum cover. Underneath is the same old rusty iron OEM piece.

Dog, there's nothing but the finest stainless steel braid on my S1W, though I once owned a Triumph were I put all the cables through shower hose! Those were the days.

Blake, I was going from memory but knew you had something I liked. I'm sure you showed me a pic of a billet front sprocket when you last suggested I cut down the cam cover, no?

As for the paint finish and head temps, man if the BadWeB has taught me anything over the years, we are far to anal with our Buells. Let's assume you're right. By how much of a margin and what will change significantly enough to cause problems or damage. Nowt I'd wager. In any case I doubt Buell spent that much money experimenting with different paint finishes looking for ideal head temp's. Just my opinion. Ta anyway.

Fighter, I'd like to see how you cleaned up the rear end of your S1. Maybe give me a few pointers, lol. There are several things I like about your Buell, and several I don't, but you deserve recognition not only for an interesting S1, but for also being bold enough to do something different that still maintains the character of an S1. Get a wave disc on the rear!

Being you are in Yorkshire, and Dennis is in Wisconsin, the high-heat scenario might not be so much of a concern for either of you. : )

I guarantee you though that HDMC invested significant effort ensuring that the cylinder heads are able to shed heat optimally.

As far as the finish goes, flat black is tops in emissivity - I doubt that it was purely for aesthetics that the T-Storm tuber heads were all finished in flat black - and the natural finish is not far behind. I'd be shocked if HDMC chose the OEM finishes with no concern for their emissivities.

If you do some research, you might be able to find data on your yellow paint.

If you do some research, you might be able to find data on your yellow paint.

Well, I looked at Gialo Fly used by Ferrari. Norfolk mustard yellow from Lotus, and god knows how many colour chips.

The one I ended up with, British standard yellow as used by nearly every city council in the country on their fleet vehicles. It was by far the nearest to a yellow I could find. Gialo Fly is not as bright a yellow as I imagined. As for the Lotus colour. It's got a lot of orange in it. But joking aside I haven't the foggiest what the emissivity value would be. Truth is, I'd never even heard such a word until this morning. I must confess, my nearest to understanding the emissivity, there's that word again, value of any paint was for much higher temp's when painting headers etc. But then you don't go hunting down two pack colours. Rather you buy HT paint and pray the manufacturer has done the chemistry for you.

I'll check this out with my painter friend. See if he's up to speed on this.

Amazing what we find out on the BadWeB

Tasty S1's !!!
I like too many details to mention. Love the paint, wish I could see it in person, in sunlight. Are those Joker Machine turn signals?

Thanks

The rear are indeed Jokers anodized black billet signals.

They should be updated by now if they already aren't. In this day and age the candle power of the bulb is pretty poor. Time they got a LED in there. Otherwise well made but very pricey.

"There are several things I like about your Buell, and several I don't".
Dang Rocketman, what's not to love?

As far as cleaning up the rear goes, I basically removed the turn signal mounting bracket and made a bracket to hold the tail light only.

I laugh at the Harley guys at the dealership trying to decide what doodad to add next and I look at mine trying to decide what piece I can cut off next!
