RS1200-Isolators

Maybe this belongs in the knowledge vault, but I thought it would get read quicker posted here.

I have replaced front and rear motor isolators/mounts on my 1989 RS1200. Happy to report that the current Buell parts will fit with very little modification!

First, the front isolator uses a smaller bolt. Replace your 1/2"x6" bolt and metal lock nut with 7/16"x6" bolt and metal lock nut. I used grade 8, with a very thin grade 8 washer at the top because the D washer hole is made for the 1/2" bolt.
To lift the front of the engine slightly I used a floor jack under the front shock mount.

Metal on the new rear isolators with the "ears" must be slightly shaved To fit behind the vertical frame tubes. I did NOT shave off rubber, just the outboard metal washer of the isolator.
Please see the shiny areas in the photo where I did the grinding. By just grinding the outboard washer, the rubber left will slide under the vertical frame tube.

* To align the rears use the old allen bolts, then install the new Torx bolts.
* I also had to propane torch the side plate bolts to heat the red Locktite enough to get the bolts out. (Really hated to do this, but there was no visible damage done.)
* Be VERY certain that the roll pin is the correct length and inserted completely into it's isolator hole. Failure to do this will cause the pin to separate the isolator washer from the rubber. (IE Premature failure. From experience I know this is very easy to get wrong.)

I now have stronger more reliable mounts/isolatos!

Engine Mount, Front isolator # 16207-79C $43
Rear Isolator L.H. # L0504.9 $15
Rear Isolator R.H. # L0505.9 $15
Screw 5/8x16x3/4 Torx # AA1006.10FKZB $4.13
Torx bolts torqued to 63-70 ft-lbs (85-95Nm.

they sold you the wrong front isolator
the correct part is L0501.2
that is why your bolt wouldn't fit.
I know, that is the part number in the book but it isn't the right one.

Hello Daves:

I rather like the Front isolator # 16207-79C. It has a washer under the rubber that should help keep the rubber from separating.

My RS/RSS 1200 parts book shows Buell Part # L0501.2 and the H-D Part # 16207-79B.

is L0501.2 still available and just as strong?

actually they changed the part number to the HD number
Then they changed the part itself for the HD with the smaller hole and didn't change the part number for the Buell right away.
They sent out a bulletin about the part number for the Buell being back to the L0501.2, which was also changed/updated to improve it.
