my 2001 X-1 headlight works fine when the steering column is ALL the way to the left, and turns off in any other position ?!?
i pulled it apart thinking something came loose, but it SEEMS to be in the wires.

anyone else have this happen ? do i have to replace the whole headlight wiring ???

I think this might be an easy one to track down. As you described it, I would think your problem area would be just in the front, around the frame and fork stop area on the left, as that's where all the wiring is directed before it goes through the small gap in the frame. With a multi-meter you should be able to find which wire is bad and go from there. With some solder and heat shrink tubing, I think you would be just fine. Off the top of my head, that's the only spot I can think of that would cause a wire to break. Someone else might be able to give you some more ideas.

If you don't want to mess with all of that, then I would suggest just buying the whole pigtail (assuming you can, I've never looked into it). It's all just plug and play. The only tuff part might be trying to squeeze it though the small gap in the frame.

Either way, just be sure to double check possible pinch points between the frame and the triple clamp/forks. Also if you do go with a new tail, be sure to put the zip ties back in the same spot you cut them off of.

I had the exact problem. I removed the light and separated the bundle of wires behind half of them to left and half to the right. seems to be ok for know. Buell just screwed up again with to many wires in on spot causing a short when turning the front end it pinches the wires.

I experienced the same problem. I found the problem to be in the plug connection under the Tank, If I am correct the plug color was brown. Its one of the wires that made a bad connection in the plug. I ended up soldering a bypass from the one side of the harness with a male/female connector in between to the other side of the plug. Never had any problems there after and this is 4 years later. The wire in connection could have been a red one.

The wires that go into the headlight, yellow, white and black. I have broken the wires in the area of the streering neck, by(assuming), them getting pinched between the fork and the frame.

It sounds like that is that area you should look, as when the forks are turned to the left, the tension is off the harness in that area, and the wires are slacked...

Does it do the same thing with both high and low beams? If so, it is most likely in the ground, UNLESS both the power leads are broken, and shorting out(wich is entirely possible).

BUT, if it only does that with one beam of the other, I am willing to bet that its just a broken/shorting out power lead....

Hope that helps...
