Well, I called the salesman I bought the bike from and complained. He talked to the guys in the Service Department and then called me back to tell me to drop it off at my convenience and they'd would try again to resolve the hesitation, miss, and poor closed throttle deceleration characteristics I've been experiencing. They're really friendly and treat me with respect - I just think they don't know the 1st thing about Buells and assume they can treat it like a sportster.

I'm going to drop it off tonight. After giving it to them twice and getting it back with a "Runs great now!" both times - only to find out 3 blocks later that there was no improvement - I don't have my hopes up.

If they don't fix it this time, its strike 3 as far as I'm concerned. Being in MN, its not too far to ride over to the Factory in WI and pound on Erik's door...

Why would you want to pound on Erik's door? It's a 6 year old used motorcycle, way out of factory warranty. That's why they sell NEW motorcycles with a warranty.

Anyways hope your dealership resolves your issues for you...............

Nick,
Hope they get it this time.
It definately wasn't running the way it should. Especially with the race ECM.
It was great to meet you and your wife on Saturday.

Naustin,
I'm coming into this late so forgive me asking the obvious, what's it doing? Can you describe the symptoms? Nevrmind I looked at your profile. It sounds to me to be TPS related. Check the TPS wiring carefully the symptoms you describe are very similar to what my bike was doing last year when it had a broken ground wire for the TPS. It will still run but the computer gets confused because the high resistance in the ground circuit throws all the voltage readings on the signal return line off. You may also want to make sure the dealer reset the TPS correctly as mine goofed the first time around after I replaced mine. I do most of my own work but I haven't been able to get a scanlyzer cheap enough off ebay yet and am now scrounging for a laptop so I can get the VDTS and Direct Link instead.

Naustin, Keep us up to date on this one. I know how frustrating it can be. I have the VDTS software and would be more than happy to help out with it if all else fails. Only thing is I am a little ways away. I am about 4hrs NW. The VDTS has been a godsend in keeping my X1 maintained. Let me know if I can help a fellow Bueller.

Aldaytona - i was kidding about pounding on Erik's door. I realize it's a used bike. I knew it had some problems when I bought it - and I'm willing to PAY to have those problems resolved. Overall its a great bike and my wife and I both love it. I'm just frustrated that the dealership doesn't seem to know how to fix it -- not that the bike needs a little TLC.

Brad - Ann and I really enjoyed meeting you too! Thanks so much for that suspension adjustment - it made a world of difference on the ride home! And, your S2 is sweet, I couldn't believe how much different it felt than the S3. They are truly completely different bikes - I really liked it! Can't wait to see all those other projects done too. We'll see you again. If you're even coming though Albert lea, let me know - I'll have a beer ready for you!

Race Thanks for the offer! I'll let you know. I'll probably pony up for the VDST myself if the dealer lets me down again.

The dealer was really nice when I dropped the bike off last night, and took more time to talk to me about what it is actually doing. They're going to work on it today, and the Service Writer told me he'd probably throw it on the dyno so they can see whats going on. I'll keep you posted.

If I get it back and its still not right - I'll have to start investing in tools and equipment to work on the bike myself. I'm actually a pretty quick study - I just don't have much for tools and I don't want to end up sheering off a head bolt or getting in over my head and having to be bailed out. Been there, done that before.

I called the dealer on Friday. I'd dropped it off on Tuesday night, and they'd had it all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, as I called them Friday about 4:30. The shop manager said nobody had touched it yet.

After all the promises they made to put it on the dyno and take care of it "first thing tomorrow morning" they hadn't even touched it yet.

I did an admirable job of disguising my outrage on the phone, and said: "Okay...I'd try back next week." But, instead, I went there first thing on Saturday and picked up my bike. I just told them I wanted to go for a ride. And played like I'd bring it back later. I won't be bringing it back to them, however.

If I need dealer service now, I'll have to somehow haul it over 100 miles to St. Paul HD/Buell and leave it with them and have somebody follow me there to give me a ride home. I don't have time for that....

I'm sure he would - and I bet it would take 5 minutes. While I was kidding about actually doing it - I'm tempted. Though - instead of pounding, I'd knock politely and bring beer...

I'll try the VDST first. Just gotta bite the bullet and order it...

Naustin, that's disgusting. It shows they have no respect. I bet the shop owner would be interested to hear how his service manager treats his customers and how you'd rather take your bike 100 miles away to get "Valued customer satisfaction". Too bad they're not like my Chevrolet Dealer, whose motto is "We want you COMPLETELY SATISFIED".

If you have any of that pent-up outrage left after taking a ride to restore your sanity, I'd (if it were me) give the owner a call to let him know what didn't happen and what's about to happen.

On the other hand, perhaps it would have helped to call the service manager first thing every morning for a status, just as a reminder that YOU haven't forgotten that your bike is his shop?

Sparky- If I have to tattle-tale to the boss to get them to work on my bike - then I wouldn't trust them to work on it anyway.

3 strikes - they're out. This is not something the owner can fix by apologizing or promising to "take care of it". Until there's a Pegasus plaque on their wall and decent buell inventory - and the service department has been re-staffed - I don't care what they "say". I will mention to the owner next time I see him around town though.

Brad Once I get it, I'll share it with you...

Hey Naustin; I have one of the first versions of the TPS reset software, new in box. It was bought for use with a PDA, but the tech at the company said it ought to work with a laptop using a null-modem adapter - which I also bought.

I had it for sale recently, but no bidders.

So if you want to take it for a spin and see if it works with a laptop if that's what you have, shoot me a PM with your addy and I'll get it sent out to you this week.

Just send it back to me when you're done.

The null-modem plugs are not pictured. I also have the latest version of the software *before* they went back to the "either/or" version - PC vs. PDA

Naustin - I'd suggest you take a peak at the timing. Even if someone checked it, it can sometimes move when being tightened down. When I installed the race ecm and had the TPS reset, the dealer reset the timing (don't know why they went in there but whatever). When they were tightening it down it moved on them and I noticed on the ride home that the idle would hang around 2500 until I put a little load on it (engage the clutch just a bit at a stop) and then it would drop back to where it should be (one of the symptoms described in your profile). Resetting the timing (again) solved it. Might be worth looking into.

To check timing on your FI bike without a digital technition. It is not that hard to do and even the colors of the wires are the same for our 2001 bikes. This would be one of the first things I would do along with a TPS reset and I would also do a sweep of the TPS to make sure there is no opens in the range. If you get the techno software you can monitor head temp readings to see if it is right. The new update looks like it will give you the AFV reading. On my X1 it read 100 as the value. Take Henrik up on his offer. I think you won't be sending it back once you get it to work. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=32777&post=441639#POS T441639

Henrik That's really awesome! - you have a PM...

Uwgriz / Raceautobody I wondered if the timing could be off just a little. Thanks for the suggestion, though I'll probably have to leave that inspection/adjustment to someone that's done it before.

IaMike I saw your profile and the post about the head temp sensor. Does what I describe in my profile sound like what your bike did when the head temp sensor lead was broken??

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but on my 2001, the HTS is on the rear jug, under the rocker box in that cavity area, right? So, the rocker box has to come off to get at it?

Nick-
I broke mine when I was pulling the connector apart. The rubber strain relief kept it intact so I didn't realize that it was broken and it was making intermittent contact.

It is in the rear head and easily accessible near the spark plug. I am pretty sure that I got 'Check Engine' indication when the circuit went open.

What the HTS does is to tell the ECM to fire the rear cyclinder less often if it indicates a hot cyclinder. It acted (obviously, since it was) that it was missing. The resistance goes up as the temp. goes up. An open would be infinite resistance.

You could check it with an ohm meter, one lead on the wire (unplugged from the harness) and one to ground. Wiggle or pull the lead around and see if the resistance changes.

p.s. Nice lookin bike you got there.

Nick-
I just read your profile and what you describe sounds like an intake leak. Easy to find, easy to fix.

With the bike running spray WD-40 around the intake maifold by the cyclinders. If the idle changes you found your leak. Several guys had problems with their intake seals so I changed mine @ 30,000mi. as as prevention. When I did that I found the boot was missing off of the Evap cannister tube at the bottom of the throttle body. That made mine run crummy until it warmed up.

Mike - I previously tried that test except I used Carb Cleaner - and I didn't note any change in the idle. I'll try again tonight with WD40 though and I'll look for that tube on the throttle body too....

I'm pretty sure my HTS is not near the spark plug, but under the rocker box in the "cavity". I can see a wire leading under the rocker box into the "cavity". I also read somewhere in another thread that the location for the HTS changed in `00 or `01 and it isn't nearly as easy to get to; But I could be wrong...

Thanks for the compliment on my bike - it looks alot like yours. : )

Update

OK - So I did the intake seal test again and this time used WD40. Took the bike out for 1/2 an hour before time to make sure it was good and warmed up.

At idle, I sprayed the stuff into the area of both the throttle body and the intakes and did not note any change in the idle speed or sound.

So, I reved it up to 2K and held it there and sprayed some more. No difference.

Then I let it idle normally and I sprayed WD40 in there till it was dripping and burning off the headers and... nothing. Idle was totally unchanged.

So, I don't think I have leaky intake seals...

I should be receiving the VDST software from Henrik Thanks man! in the next day or two, so then I can reset the TPS and go from there....}

Brad - Thanks man, I'll let you know. Is it the intake temp sensor, or the head temp sensor?

I'm still waiting on a Service Manual. Hopefully there is some trick to replace the head temp sensor without having to pull the rocker box off. The head temp sensor on my `01 is level with the base of the spark plug, but sitting over on the center of the head, under the rocker box in that "cavity" area. I can barely get a finger on it...
