I recently replaced gear oil w/ Royal Purple 75w90 and apparently I put too much as I can't find neutral at idle, especially when the bike warms up. The bottle I bought was a quart and I didn't even use the entire bottle. What the heck is going on here? Also, why does the Royal Purple website have 10W30 as the recommended tranny oil for Sportsters and Buells? Thanks, Chad.

Forgot to add... Can I drain some of the gear oil or do I need to start over here? Thanks again, Chad.

Go ahead and drain some. My bike didn't take a full quart either. The oil level should just reach the bottom of the clutch shell.

Why did you add gear oil to the tranny when RP recommends the use of engine oil? RP does pay big money to tribologists whose job it is to evaluate and recommend the best product to the application.

GL-5 gear oil typically contains sulfur which is corrosive to brass and copper -- metals that you have plenty of in your tranny. Many have had to replace stators due to the use of GL-5 gear oils in the tranny.

"metals that you have plenty of in your tranny."
I don't believe that is true, and there have been zero reports of any such component failures here on BadWeB. In fact the exact opposite has been reported, that one such bronze component has exhibited no visible signs of corrosion after thousands of miles exposure to Mobl-1 75W90 a GL5 gear lubricant.

"Many have had to replace stators due to the use of GL-5 gear oils in the tranny."

That remains here-say and entirely anecdotal at this point, but compelling enough evidence does now exist to disuade one from using Mobil-1 or other GL-5 gear lubricants in our transmission/primary cases.

Blake:
You don't believe it is true that there is brass and copper in the XL transmission?

I'd like to see ANYONE show me a lubricant manufacturer that RECOMMENDS the use of GL-5 gear oil in the XL/B transmission. Because there's PLENTY that specifically recommend ENGINE oil, e.g., Mobil1, HD, Redline, AMSOIL, RP, etc...

The point is, why not follow the recommendation of professional Tribologists? If you want to experiment, then fine, but caveat emptor...

Tribology seems a funny name for friction study and lubrication, don't it? Anyway, I don't even know where I picked up the 75w-90 number or the use of synthetic versions thereof, but if it's wrong then it's wrong. I just want smooth shifts and a long lasting transmission. Thanks, Chad.
