Does anyone know the size of the banjo bolts for a 97 S3. I'm at a dealership trying to order new brake lines, and I didnt think to check on the banjo bolt size. | ||

The banjos themselves come in two sizes, 10mm and 12mm. That is the nominal diameter of the hole in the banjo, if you measure the I.D. with a caliper, it will measure very close to that. The 10mm banjos are used with both 10mm and 3/8" (9.53mm) diameter banjo bolts. The 12mm banjos are used with both 12mm and 7/16" (11.11mm) diameter banjo bolts. The American threads used on banjo bolts are: 3/8"-24 TPI 7/16"-24 TPI The metric threads used on banjo bolts are: 10mm x 1.0 thread 10mm x 1.5 thread There may be such a thing as a 12mm banjo bolt but I've never seen or heard of one. I think the 12mm banjos are used pretty much exclusively on American motorcycles and some racing applications and with 7/16"-24 TPI banjo bolts. If you can find a 10mm x 1mm bolt and a 10mm x 1.5mm bolt in a hardware or auto parts store you can try those in the calipers on your S3 to narrow it down to the right bolt. I'd be very surprised that your bolts are not one of those two metric threads if the calipers are made outside the U.S. If you want to also get a "test bolts" for the American threads, pick up a 3/8" SAE, Fine, or UNF bolts (24 threads per inch) and you can try that in the calipers. There is no common bolt in the 7/16"-24 TPI thread (7/16"-20 is UNF, 7/16"-28 TPI is UNEF). It may be that some American made brake components are about the only place in the world where that thread is much used. Jack | ||
