I finally got a race ECM for my S3. I was planning on doing the install like most XB riders do; ride the bike to the dealer, swap the ECM in the parking lot, push it into the shop for TPS reset. Unfortunately, the ECM on an S3 is up under the rear bodywork and looks like it will be near-impossible to swap without first removing the rear bodywork, which is kind of beyond the scope of something I can do in the dealer's parking lot. Does anyone know a trick for doing this? I suppose it might be possible to access the ECM mounting bolts from underneath, drop it down, swap plugs to the new ECM, then reinstall, but it's doubtful. I'm kind of hoping someone here knows a trick I haven't thought of. Otherwise, I guess I'll install the new ECM at home and truck the bike to the dealer for the TPS reset. Thanks in advance. | ||

Hugh If iI remember correctly, the tail section comes off with about 7 phillips head screws and one tank bolt. The rear tail light has 3 wires as well. No way to get around swapping the ECM without taking it off. DAve | ||

No trick like Dave mentioned, gots to remove the bodywork. How far is it to the dealer? I installed mine at home and rode it to the dealer (about 10 miles). It wasn't running perfect but not terrible (YMMV). Otherwise, it's just my opinion, but I'd pull the bodywork in the parking lot. | ||

I replaced my throttlebody recently and wa able to ride mine to the shop for the reset. It wasn't running good at all but not so bad that it fouled the plugs either. I did have to set the idle to pretty high so that it would stay running thouugh. | ||

I actually recently did a battery install and removing the rear tail section is easy. Phillips screw driver is all that is necessary and a socket wrench to remove the bolt at the base of the gas tank. Simply lift the gas tank and the tail section should slide right off. I have a question on a related subject. Is that all there is to an ECM upgrade? TPS reset? | ||

I would recomend doing an AFV reset as well if you ride it in Hugh are you going to colombia to meet up with FB1 & FB2? If so I got the kit just have to lug the laptop. | ||

Thanks for the input guys. I've had the tail section off several times so I'm familiar with the procedure. The dealer is about 15 miles away, but a significant amount of stop-and-go traffic is involved no matter what route I take. I think what I'll do is change the ECM at home and see how the bike runs. If the bike does OK on a short ride, I'll ride it to the dealer. If not, I'll truck it in. Do you know anyone with the VDTS on a lap top? They can zero the TPS for you. | ||

Oldog is the closest I know of (see above) but I won't be able to meet him this weekend. Local dealer (Lowcountry HD/Buell) has a good Buell tech; said they would reset TPS, check timing, and reset AFV (service rep recommended doing all 3 at once) for ~$75 which I thought was pretty good. They could take me any day this week so I made an appointment for Wednesday. | ||

Well, they're stocking Sporty parts anyway (i.e.- my stator replacement job), and they have been good with me about supporting Buell. I installed the race ECM tonight; bike fired right up and idled fine, at ~3500 RPM though it was bucking and shuddering pretty good. I think I can ride it to the dealer without a problem as long as I take it easy. I have an air cleaner swap to finish up tomorrow afternoon and then I'll ride it over to the dealer. Hugh |
