I recently purchased a nice 2001 M2L with only 2500 miles on it and I noticed that it has an oil leak from the rear cylinder around the rocker box gaskets. I know this is a common problem and I have purchased the XB rocker box conversion kit and am ready to install it but I have a question: I can't tell if the oil is leaking from above the lower rocker box (the XB conversion kit and its new gaskets will take care of this) or if it is between the top of the cylinder and the lower rocker box. I would hate to install the XB conversion kit only to find I still have an oil leak. I do have the service manual and it looks like there is a bit more work involved to remove the lower rocker box to replace that gasket so I don't want to do that if I don't have to. So I would really appreciate hearing from those who have been down this road before. Any info is appreciated!

You went from the rocker box to the cylinder. I think I found your leak. There's a thunderstorm head missing. Seriously though, the leaks generally occur at the junction of the top of the head and the lower rocker box due to a failure of the gasket. You will have to go a little deeper to fix your leak. The good news is the new metal gaskets appear to prevent a reoccurance.

You have a service manual, right?

Yes I have the service manual. It looks like I need to replace the gasket below the lower rocker box. Do you have the part number for the new metal gaskets and is this something that Harley dealers generally carry?

Brian,
Any Harley dealer will have the new gaskets.
They are the same as the Sportster.
Sorry, don't have the part number handy.

Very easy fix, just take your time.
Lots of pictures in the KV section.

P/N 16800-84 for just one of the metal gaskets,

P/N 17036091 for "GASKET KIT, ROCKER COVER, XL'S" and that includes everything you need to replace and change (all gaskets, umbrella valves, etc.).

More good info and details in the KV at these links:

Remove all gasket residue, clean everything spotless, the gaskets install without any sealant and the stamped in number readable side up. Follow the procedures and torque specs in the service manual for best results.

Good luck with the work!

Jack

Much thanks to all for the info! I am looking forward to tearing into this project. This job would be nearly impossible for me if I didn't have access to all of the info on this site. The local Harley shop gives me a funny look when I ask them for info/part numbers/etc on Buell bikes.

One other thing - Evo engines respond well to being "warmed up" before they're ridden hard - 1 minute or so to allow the alloy to expand and
"fill in the gaps"

"Sometimes ya gots to speak sportsterese to the them dealer types."

If it was only that easy. I went to a HD (only) dealer to get assorted gaskets and primary shoe for my 2000 M2. I came with the part number I needed for the shoe and explained that everything I need was identical to a 2000 Sportster, but the parts man thought he was smarter than me and looked up all the parts anyway.

I waited 2 weeks and got gaskets and a shoe for a Blast. They didn't even sell Buells there, so I thought I was safe, but the parts man found a way to screw me anyway.

Unless I can help it, everything I get comes from Al and Daves, exclusively.

Ya know we used to know who we were Djkaplan, this kinda crap has been going on since the 1990 and still in 2006 you cant find a decent parts counter person ANYWHERE. Nobody cares either, Ive had problems at Daves too when I dont talk to him . I asked for the lower body bolt that lives next to the shifter bolt on a x1. I told the guy dont send me a shifter bolt. He sends me a shifter bolt anyway, called back and had to make the person get out of the engine section and send me the body panal bolt like I asked for. Owell maybe in another 10 years.

I am currently replacing the rocker box gaskets on my 2000 m2, and I was wondering, after I clean all the bolt holes and bolt surfaces, should I lubricate the bolts prior to installing them?, and if so does anyone know the proper lubricant? I have the service manual but haven't found any info.
