Author Message   Mwellm Posted on Saturday, June 17, 2006 - 07:32 pm:        My shifter oil seal leaks a small amount. What is the opinion on replacing this? It doesn't seem like it could ever leak enough to ever be a real problem, but I could be wrong.   Patrickh Posted on Saturday, June 17, 2006 - 11:07 pm:        easy to fix. i don't like oil leaks of any type no matter how small. i have never replaced it while mounted but i imagine you could pry it out gently with a small sharp hook. make sure you cover the serrated edges of the shifter with electrical tape before you reinstall or you will have the same problem when you are done.   Mwellm Posted on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:32 am:        Thanks for the feedback on this. Good tip with the tape.   Patrickh Posted on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 09:59 am:        the seal is made of stiff rubber, the shifter shaft is made of a harder metal than the primary cover but I would try not to scratch either.   Bluzm2 Posted on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 - 01:15 pm:        You can remove the seal while on the bike with a small pick. To install the new seal, cut off the corner of a baggie and slip it over the splines. Apply a little oil to the baggie tip. Slide new deal over the baggie then seat with a deep socket. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes once you have the shifter arm off. No big deal! Make sure you completely remove the bolt that holds the shifter on the shaft, the shaft has a groove that the bolt slides into. Drove me nuts the first time. And the shifter is supposed to be brittle, if you pry it apart it will break. Use a puller once you get the bolt completely out. If you have a friendly tranny shop near Snap-on make a tool that threads into seal and pulls seal out.   Mwellm Posted on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 10:33 pm:        Sounds like that tool could be the way to go.
