When I switch to reserve and go fill up I can only get about 2.5-2.7 gallons in. Really annoying to fill up so soon, but I don't want to be riding around on reserve.
Any ideas?

There is a small tube inside the screen mounted on the petcock, inside the tank. You can trim this tube and make reserve as low as you want. Cut the tube, not the screen.

Thanks.
Why would it be set from the factory like that. Could it be something else?

Djakaplan is right. (Almost) everybody rides with a shortened petcock tube. Why not from the factory with a shorter tube? Nobody knows.

If it's something else, you'll know what it is when you take the petcock off.

I left mine stock, btw.

Nice to hear from you, Hans.

my guess ( which is only that, and worth what you've paid for it) is that an early Buell development rider was was developing late one night.

Buell's early factories were located in a pretty rural area -- late at night, it's easy to be a long far from any open gas station --

so there he was, running down the road, bike coughs, switches to reserve and the development rider continutes to develop

until 45 minutes later, when the bike coughs again, and he's already switched to reserve

the next day, it was determined to make reserve generous, so as to avoid roadside camping in the future

again, this should be considered a slightly amusing tale, if that, and is based on no Secret Squirrel info

btw, I shortened my reserve tube, too ;-}

I personally left my reserve at the factory setting. I can't ride for more than 200 miles in a single sitting anyways. It must be the old age kicking in on me: D

I think I over-shortened my reserve tube on the M2. This reminds me to fill the camping fuel jugs and go for a long ride one of these days to find out how short I shortened it to. Hopefully I left at least a half-gallon before dry on the reserve.

John,
Maybe some Saturday or Friday afternoon once you've got your stator restated we'll have to do a Madison-west crud run of sorts.

MikeJ -- best ideas i've heard in a long time -- parts on order, I think (including the rotor -- ouch)

Mennis -- . . . . nah, too cheap a shot, even for me
