Well, since the bike is on teh front stoop now, I look at it every time I have a smoke..(smoke outside, kid in the house and all)

Well, I look at the air filter and that are at eye level...

I was thinking about soemthing like we do on older carb'd cars adn trucks... We make a heat shield, that covers the intake, adn shields the carb, adn air filter area, to keep that area just THAT much cooler..

I was think about this, because, the header is RIGHT below the airfilter, and teh motor is RIGHT behind it..

So, I was thinking, of something, like just a simple aluminium plate behind the ham-can, with a 90* bend below it, to sheild it from the header as well as the engine, maybe, with a little bend toward the center, to help direct a little more air to the filter area while riding.

usually, justa simple plate is all thats needed as it helps block radiant heat..but, a little fiberglass matting, or something like a space blanket type foil would also help...

I dont know, having my bike busted, and seeing all the time, just kind of a thought.. should help prevent heat soak and whatnot...I dont know, dont know how I would make it so it isnt unsightly(not all about bling, but purposely making look like trash isnt my thing either....

So, just kinda wondering what ya'll think?

humor me... I am gonna try to draw something up on the comp, and try to figure out how to post it...

Well, it had crossed my mind, but, my header is ceramic coated, adn that drops temps, a hair under 200*

I was thinking more along the bigger picture, as there is PLENTY of heat coming off the heads as well..

haet DOES soak into surrounding parts..tuhs, putting somesort of heat shield in the way, should help defelct heat from other areas, BESIDES the header..though, I know thats the biggest offender...

Besides, as much as I hate to admit it, that sterlin coating, is starting to grow on me...: )

Chase:
If you do not mind who did it and what did it cost? I would like to do that to my sled,
I wish that they had a Gold color like the header was originaly,

how many miles on the sled when you did it

are you thinking about a wall to block the engine heat, I think that you are right about the heat soak aspect of the situation
and yeah keeping the incomming air cool is power.

the header was doen by Jet Hot.. it was the D&D full system I just bought..

The whole system was done inside and out..

http://www.jet-hot.com/

There ya go...I know others have done the stock header through them, mayeb they could post up with what they paid..

As far as the rest of the post, yeah, something like a wall..though, just a simple sheild, maybe with some insulation backing..I dont want it to be too elaborate..OR blck any cooling from the motor...I thinking mocking something up..still got alot of carbboard laying around from the move..just wish I had a camera...

more or less...

But, it would be sandwiched between the filter base, adn the throttle body... and be larger than the ham-can.

The plate in back, would probably curve towards the center of the bike(mount to the front mount at the head), with a small profile there...

Again, i dont know how well it woudl work, if it woudl even be worth the effort...but hey...

Does it really matter on a fuel injected bike?

Eh, that has yet to be seen.

I haven noticed mine, when its hot, in traffic, will become sluggish, hestiant, and slighty unresponsive.

If I can keep some of the heat away from the air box, it should help minimize this, in slow, to no movement situations....

Also, tha IAT helps control some of the mixture...to a point.. and keeping that area cool.

Again, I have no idea, its a faily open area, and, like I said, it was something I was thinking about yesterday, while outside having a smoke..

Figured I would post it..and get some feedback...

The more I think about it... eh...

May do it for haha's and see if it makes a difference...
