How much do you think I'll have to pay to have the base gasket replaced if I take it to a custom motorcycle shop that deals with v-tiwns?

I've got the engine/trans out of the bike and will take it to them.

Just replacing both gaskets. Maybe around $350? Located outside Baltimore.

If you can take the engine out, you can surely replace base gaskets.

Use the good metal gaskets; Cometic are decent. In fact, use anything, including an old pizza box, instead of OEM. Parts cost for a set of gaskets is less than $90, but you might experience "while it's apart I might as well ...." syndrome.

My base gasket leak cost $2k. But that included a fresh powdercoat on the frame, .05 over on the cylinders, new pistons & rings, a valve job, new Buell Race air cleaner, etc, etc, etc.

How many miles on the bike? I'd at least have them check the cylinders and valves for tolerances. Then get the complete topend gasket kit for around $85. It only takes about an hour or two (if you FOLLOW THE MANUAL) to reassemble.

Good luck! I just finished mine a few weeks ago.

If re-assembled according to the factory, and using the most up-to-date gaskets, OEM replacement components should work just fine. H-D has put a lot of R&D into gasket materials. I think they had some sort of problem in the 70's with an occasional leak or two. : )

As far as costs, it depends on the shop, but I would always recommend taking it to an actual Buell dealer if available. I know they're not as prevalent as they used to be, but the thinning of the heard has revealed true dedicated dealers.

The motor has 36,000 miles on it. I remember when I got it not long ago with only 17,000.

I'm sure I could do it myself, it's just about having time to get it done. I sold the bike to my dad and I want to get the little things fixed before giving it to him.

The little things: base gaskets replaced and all new front and rear isolators.... yeah the little things!

If your selling it to your dad and taking it down that far, do him a favor and have sized up for some new rings. He may even want to contribute $$ alittle. At 36000 your blow-by is bound to be on the increase. And that might be why your base gaskets are leaking to begin with....Charlie

I am just trying to save up, becuase I KNOW I am gonna have that "while its apart...."

1250 kit..maybe stage 2 heads...536 cams etc etc etc

Yeah...basically, wont happen...I jsut keep adding oil.....lol

you might also want to check your valve guides and seals while you have it down.
