I'm driving Christine, my '02 X1 to work today on US1, and suddenly without warning or apparent cause, my right foot is suddenly floating unsupported.

I pulled over thinking I'd have to go back and look for the foot rest, but it was still hanging there attached to the break lever.

Close inspection showed that the 5/16" bolt had broken off about 1/16" inside the footrest.

Had I been standing up, as I sometimes do over railroad tracks or potholes or to get a "better view", this could have been disasterous.

Anyhow- as far as I know the bike has never tipped over to impact this footrest, nor has it seen any other major impacts.

I removed the other bolt from the left side and I'm going to ACE tomorrow to see what is the HARDEST bolt I can find to replace them.

I talked to another friend who collects bikes (I think he has 7 now). He said all of his either have 1/2" bolts, or two 3/8". A single 5/16" bolt seems like a poor design choice to support what could be perhaps 300 pounds of load.

Anyhow- just a warning to others. I was lucky this time.

Odd.
The heads of my bolts are 1/2".
Are you talking about the threaded section?

IIRC, the mount is investment cast and not too stout, my sled fell on me and broke the threads out of that rest MOUNT.
If you can extract the bolt end, use the correct length grade 8 bolt tighten to spec with loc tite and check it once in a while, last winter while the bike was down for PM I re checked mine and found them loose, its at least a once a year item

Glad that you did not get off

Nate the bolt is a 5/16" x 16 tpi head is 1/2".

sounds like a bad bolt [ made in china ]

I was able to extract it. Thanks for the tip on Grade - I'll try to locate a Grade 8.

What about a stainless Steel bolt? A mechanic told me they are not really very strong?

Are there aftermarket footrests that are more reliable?

Thanks for the info.

I stand on or weight the pegs on my X1 quite a bit and they are constantly vibrating loose. In fact, so much so that I check them before each ride.

Locktite (blue) doesn't seem to help much so I plan to replace the parts assuming I must have overstressed the OEM parts.

Thanks again for the grade and size info.

All:
the length of bolt seems to be critical on this,
also there is not much room behind the mount slot in the frame, I want to recall that there was a cupped washer there If you find this to be true, make sure that you install it bowl down ( visualize a soup bowl up side down) this may be a bellville washer, ( a form of a spring )
and if blue Loctite dont work after a good cleaning, I guess try red.

the rest mount is buell specific I doubt that you will find one. the pegs are available but they were not the issue

SS bolts, the one's in hardware stores, anyways, are generally not too stout -- not even grade 5 -- I'd avoid them in areas such as this, and go for a grade 8, which your hardware store should carry

It is critical. The HD dealer told me the spec is 7/8 long, 5/16 diam"

it's not just a ride, it's a career commitment, Buell different in every sense

One thing we X1 riders should do is scrape away the frame paint where the peg's pivot goes.
As it wears away, it can jam your shifter or brake.
My X1 pegs do not vibrate loose ever. I don't use locktite or anything.
Perhaps your isolators are going bad?

Now, that is funny!

Looks like I will be checking the bike today. I have a nagging suspicion that the cupped washer just may be the missing link.

Thanks again.

errata :

bolt would be 5/16 -18 tpi x 7/8" long

not 5/16 -16

threaded fasteners develop maximum joint strength at about 1.5 ~ 2 diameters of engagement

OOps yes that sounds right..

By the way, the "bolt store" had a grade 8, but only in one inch. So I took that instead. Turns out it threaded WAY into the peg- almost all the way in. So I used that size instead, and added a lock-washer and loctite blue.

I suspect a 1.25" bolt might work too..
