Don't know that I have ever seen a step-by-step list, other than the "ride a safe motorcycle" warning in the owners manual, but I'll try.
Start at some point of the bike (shift lever, or air intake, for example) and go completely around the bike, back to the starting point. And always do it the same way each time. Check each control as you get to it-does it feel right, does the brake (for example) really apply and does the light come on, ect. And for tubers, pay particular attention to the exh. nuts, muffler mounts, and the muffler/header joint. Since you check the fluid levels before each ride, and tire pressures at least once a week, you are ready!
Ride safe, have fun!!!!

I usually check my bike after a ride.
You know the usual things like oil level and exhaust hardware.

I start mine and look to make sure nothing's rattling off. If it's solid I go.
I do check the rest of the things once in awhile.
Before a big ride I do go through it a lot closer. I'd hate to break down and mess up the ride for the other guys.
Some people are pretty picky about their pre-flight. I've been riding for so long I've gotten used to what to look for.
Famous last words from a pilot "Oh that little oil leak, that's been doing that for a long time."
