Have a 99 X1, wife was riding this weekend when she was unable to shift. We stopped, I got on and have lost neutral and first, difficult to get in gear. I have LSL rearsets, so need to check the linkage more thoroughly, but thinking of returning to stock controls also. From the KV and searches, it looks like I need to check the detente plate, perhaps the clutch cable as well as the linkage. I have a manual.

Any new experiences/advice on transmission and/or controls to share when troubleshooting this? Hopefully will not have to open it up. Thanks.

Also, I believe there was an issue with the primary tensioner...just check thoruhgthe window, and see that you have the right amount of play in your primary chain.

But, yeah, could be the detent plate, or other issues in that area..

If you are going back to stock, Check the Chain Tensioner as Chasespeed said, also look into a 2002 shifter, they are much more compact and I belive a bit better to shift w/ you might update the Detent plate also.

Thanks for the input, I was thinking about spending the $99 for the updated shifter also.

I did that upgrade on my 00 x1 and it really makes a difference. Shifting is much more precise than it was with the original "around the horn" style shifter.

I am going hazard a guess that you have 2 things going on. First you should open up the primary chain inspection window to see if you have a lot of slack. If the chain is very loose, over an inch of Up and down play, then you have broken the shoe on your primary chain tension adjuster. This is a common problem which is fairly easy to fix.

also, there is a good chance that the pieces of the shoe may have rattled around and dislodged the relatively delicate circlip which retains the detent plate on the end of the shifter drum. This too is not so bad of a fix.

Methinks you'll have to pull the primary cover.

Thanks...I think I may try to do this at home, albeit in stages. I've seen instructions in the X-1 files, but not sure if I have to pull the exhaust too?

no exhasut shenanigans required, Hope -- dropping the primary is easy-peasy -- just make sure you get the current metal primary gasket, and not the justly-maligned paper unit --
