The Showa rear shock finally took a dump and puked all over the S2 - so much for a quick spin this afternoon
It's the 16.4" one. I guess I have a couple of options:
1. Buy a Penske or Works for $$$ and probably (at least with the Works) lose preload adjustment for when Jenn wants to come along.
2. Buy another Showa on ebay and keep my fingers crossed it doesn't S^&* the bed right away.
3. Have the Showa rebuilt (I seem to remember FMJ used Aftershocks, right? Straight rebuild looks like 110 bucks?)
4. Find an original WP rear shock - they pop up on ebay from time to time - and have it rebuilt, keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't break.
Anyone have any thoughts?

David, depends on your budget as the Penske etc are at least 700,and it seems all the Showas eventually puke.My rebuilt one worked really nice, so that is a real option.

Jim,
Yeah, it's a budget ? at this point with the kid due in 3 months. I know the better long term answer is Works or Penske, but . . .
btw I stand corrected - the Works is preload adjustable.
I'm just cranky cause the weather is finally starting to cooperate and I got a Buell I can't ride.
argh

Well the rebuilt stock one on my RS is leaking again and now I too am looking into the Penske's
Is it true they need rebuilding every 1000 miles?
tracksideengineering did my rebuild, I might just send it back to have them look at it again.
'course I'll wait until it's *really* leaking as my Buell's been down for 9 months and I'd really like to ride it sometime.

Josh the WP is leaking again? Somewhere in the archives Henrik warned that a leaking WP is a possible sign of impending failure, so be careful if you decide to run it.
That's really what I'm trying to figure out - I don't want to get the Showa rebuilt and have it leaking again by August so I'm out the money for a rebuild, and buying a Works or Penske on top of it.

How many of the original WP shocks with the exposed spring actually broke?

Also, can those original shocks be rebuilt?

I am also considering one of the original shocks, but have hear mixed comments on the actual failure of the shock.

I may need corrected, but why do so many people claim them to be dangerous?

If I had a older shock that did not leak or had one rebuilt, it is safe like any other shock??

Thanks in advance
Seth

The original Works performance had issues with 200# and up riders. At 220 I'm still crossing my digits. No leaks or problems thus far.

I have a WP rear shock with a remote res. It was not cheap by any stretch but it has been a great shock for me and occasionally I ride 2 up.

No complaints. I would give a vote for WP.
