I used stainless steel wool to repack some sidemount header mufflers I had on my Camaro years ago and it didn't turn out so good - it burned out pretty quickly. It didn't last nearly as long as the original fiberglass packing.

stainless will burn up PDQ as well! Glass is the way to go if there's any heat involved

ahhh,, was reading how some people claim to only get 3000 miles out of a repacked race can,, i repacked my v&h with a two stroke packing and liked the results,, not really sure on the life of it though.. i just found a nos borla and put on the s2. borla uses stainless steel packing and claims them to last a million miles,, nice exhaust,, love it but may sell it and put on the race can i have coming in. the borla is for the stock s2 header. im not sure if the race can i am getting will need repacking but probably should just to be sure,, safe than sorry thing. let me know what you guys have tried and how it works,, approx price too.. maybe we can all find a better solution.

i had asked a while ago if anyone had used ceramic refractory material (ceramet's the trade name i googled)to repack... just wondering if anyone has tried this, or do i get to be the test pilot. it seemed to have all of the features i desired, only problem is the minimum order quantities.

Aaron,
I used the packing from American Sport Bike for my S2.
It works great! I'd use it again in a heartbeat.
It lasts much longer than 3000 miles.
I think I have about 6 on mine right now.
No intention of repacking either as it still sounds the same as when I packed it.
