I replaced my V&H with a D&D. My first reaction was to turn to my friend and ask, "what did we do!?"

The bike is significantly louder. I'd say at least 30% louder at idle. It also has a slower lump lump to it compared to the V&H which always sounded more revvy and fast at idle.

It's not so much a Harley sound as many have said. It's angrier than any Harley I've ever heard. Sportier too, if that makes sense. In terms of volume, it's definitely as loud as just about any Harley I've encountered.

If it weren't for the snow and ice and salt, I'd have taken it out for a spin. Now all I can do is wait!

Install was not bad with a rear wheel stand and a friend to tilt the bike on occasion. Took a little trickery to get it to line up on the Z-bracket. And the elbow/muffler connecting was a pain in the a--.

Overall, very pleased.

I was considering one before I bought the race header/muff. Then I heard one on a buddy's bike and decided it was a bit too loud for me. To each his own!

Bayview,
I replaced my stock muffler on my X1 about a month and a half ago and I had the same reaction... But DAMN it sounds sweet...
I can't wait until the cold lets up to turn some more heads.

I did have it out for about 10 min. in Jan and I had a group of lines working give me the WTF look when they heard it fire up at the gas station...

Thank you!
I am glad to see that I wasn't the only one with that problem.

I have an 02 X1 Lightning...I Purchased the full D&D system about a year ago...I have to say this It is much louder than I had expected..Slightly too loud for my taste, It's a great pipe, built like a tank just as they say. It has increased low end power and very hard to keep the front wheel down in 1st and second..gotta really lay on the tank when your hitting the throttle hard. I feel alot of power loss from then on compared to the stock muffer...on the stock muffler, in the 3rd and 4th gear felt like it would pull my arms off...but don't get that anymore with the D&D..also have the Race Only ECM. Most definitely loss in the high range..not that i'm really into high speed...just don't like not having it if I want to..
I have the polished Header...the better of the 2 that they offered at the time..The bends near the engine are turning purple and getting dark spots all over..not what they told me would happen..I guess I paid about a Gran for the both of them...I'd get rid of it If I knew I could find something I liked better..go figure can't test drive an exhaust..

Tripp, I got the black one, I think that's all they sell. And boy, does it look the business. It would be right at home mounted to an M1 Tank.

I took it out for a ride this weekend and it's really loud. Then I had my buddy ride it while I followed on his bike and again, it's really loud.

I found myself looking over my shoulder at stoplights thinking a Harley had pulled up behind me, but I'd realize that I was the Harley.

If you don't like the sound of a FatBoy with Samson pipes at idle, pick another pipe. Fortunately, when you get the revs over 3K, it sounds like an amplified V&H.

Performance gains might be slightly improved over my ss2r in the midrange. Hard to tell. Didn't take it out on the freeway so not sure about upper end gains.

Did I mention it's loud?

Funny, I think I am the only one complaining that my full system is too QUIET. Dont know if its becuase of the Jet-Hot coating...or what...

Anyway...The full system is definately an improvement over the Race ssytem, stock..and my slip-on D&D as far as power(Race ECM)...

Ok, I need some details on the D&D muffler. I have a 99 X1 with the V&H muffler. It has not broken off and been welded back together in 6 months so it's about due to fall off. Will the D&D slip on the header for a V&H? How does the rear mount connect? Do I need a new header? What about the front mount? Who sells it? American Sport Bike? My brother has a 99 X1 with the factory race kit, it's really quiet compared to mine. It does not have the low end torque of mine but pulls your arms out of the sockets at 3500 rpm and up. It may actually pull harder than mine at high RPM. Do I really lose more high end torque with a D&D? Will there be an increase in low end torque? Thanks! Den

Den,

I have tried the factory race kit and then tried bolting the D&D onto it. The D&D is made like a tank. It is a little longer than the race muffler. One thing I wasn't big on, was how close it mounts to the rear tire. I actually felt like the race muffler had more low end torque than the D&D, but that may have been related to how the race muffler was tuned to the race header, race ECM, etc. I think the race can was just a better match initially. However, my guess is with some dyno time and a power commander you could dial in the system to fit with the D&D better.

Now that I think about it, I usually ride at 3000 rpm or above to keep the vibration down anyway, so that may be why the race can is a better fit for me.

See this link for some more comparison info I recently sent to Chase.
