I blew up my 1979 sportster transmission this fall. I think the cases might be damaged from it as I was going kinda fast at the time. Does anyone make new engine cases for old sportsters? I couldn't find any. or do you think it's better to have someone weld them up? I've had it since '94. I'd hate to have to part with it. |

I have some experience with these but someone else was the owner. One was a 76 the piston blew appart and the connecting rod actually bent up turning down into the case. Just cleaned it out and was a nice rebuild. Talk about a hot rod. It didnt even hurt the case! The other guy was so lucky his transmission locked up and blew out the bottom of the case. He picked up the pieces and got it all welded back together. He was lucky, as long as the breaks dont get into the counters shaft and the mainshaft races I wouldnt think twice about having a PROFESSIONAL weld it up. |

Good news! I just got off the phone with the shop. I'm off the hook!! It was just a shifter fork. They left a message on my machine last night: "sigh...Hi. This is about your bike.....It's back together. I need you to call the shop on Wednesday." The tone in his voice led me to think that there was schrapnel and chunks in there. Thanks everyone. You're all great. |

I'll post pics of the dead parts when I get them. Someday, I will have enough broken parts to make a complete broken bike! I already have: Pistons left flywheel rear fender, taillight, struts sissybar ugly buckhorn bars ONE highway peg seat generator rear engine mount dented rims rear caliper clutch plates, both friction and driven and list will now include 3rd and fourth gear shifter forks. |

A '79 Sporty was my first intro to HD...living in SoCal, it was an everyday ride. Did a couple of blasts into the rockies struggling across the mountains but once down at a 'reasonable' elevation it ran like a champ. Rode it daily after moving to the midwest. Only serious upgrade was the rear caliper; went with the PM dual piston and had the stopping power I wanted. My only complaint was the electronic switches--specifically the starter button. Junk. Ended up with a heavy duty Radio Shack 'hidden' button. No more problems. Very sturdy bike, very tough and agile for a Sportster! Tired of replacing the battery every Spring and replaced it with a magneto sparked '68 XLCH. Glad to hear your problems were minor. Extremely durable bikes with an extremely durable motor. That bottom end is legendary! |

OK here are the fun pics: This fork is somewhat worn: This fork is deceased! It dragged up against the 4th gear and heated up so much that it untempered the guide rod! It's bent like a banana. I was going about a hundred on the highway for a while. It was about 28 degrees out See? just because the bike seemed to want to go that fast doesn't mean that it was actually a smart thing to do. |
