Anybody know if a 180 55 Z17 fit my 1998 S1 without any problems? Think I understand what the numbers are 180 width 55 profile 17 rim size right? Not sure if the 180 will rub or not. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks Garrett

If there's a problem it will be at the belt. Look there first.

If there's a problem, worst case a chain conversion will give you clearance for a 180.

It MIGHT be possible to space the factory belt pulleys out a smidge with washers...dunno for sure.

I'm in the same boat, '97 S3 and I need to swap tires soon. I'm actually considering the Ulysses tires as I've just recently moved to the Seattle area and this constant wet is just unreal...

WELL, I know on earlier versions(pre 99 bikes), the 180 fits just fine with the PM wheels...and the only difference, as far as I know, is they are 1/2 inch wider.

I am(until I get home and get it swapped out), a 190 on the back on my X1, with no clearance issues...

the wider tire will affect the handling though(on the stock rim)..I am going to go back to a 180, as I just cant see my bike with anything smaller...

I had this discussion with Bridgestone recently. I wanted to fit one of their 180's to a stock rim and as far as they were concerned it was a no no,Apparently it can affect side wall stability as the 180 is not seated correctly on a stock OEM rim, unless you are using a PM as this is 1/2 wider.
It will also steer slower, and road contact is less than a 170, so if you ride in the wet it could be fun on the bends.
You should also check the required tyre pressures for the bike/tyre once you decide which manufacturers tyre you intend to use. You maybe surprised at what pressures you need to use.
It is likely the OEM pressures are no longer valid.
That's my 10 pence worth from Blighty.

I have the PM wheels and Dunlop 208,180 tires no problems at all

I have the stock 5" wide rear on my 02 M2 and am running 180/55-17 208 Dunlop w/no issues wet or dry.

Ah. I should have mentioned I have PMs.

As to the wet: while the curvature may be more, I'd be willing to bet that the Ulysses tires would be one HELL of a lot better in the wet'n'ugly than anything else, period, end of discussion.

A 180/55 will be just fine on your S1 (with your PM wheels). Just about perfect in fact...

Well mine's a '97 S3 but should be the same as an S1.

I checked the clearances to the belt again last night. It looks damned tight, but still possible.

I run an avon 180/55 on my S1. two things to consider. PM wheels will fit the tire but Marchisi(sp)is not proper for the tire width. The S1 inner finder will probably rub, depending on tire mfg an cross section width. I changed to an M2 inner finder and cut it down to clear.

180, Cast alloy rims, 2001 M2, no issues, feels great.
