1313, I kinda figured it was proof of it's hand-made origins; sort of how certain European pieces seem to have residual hammer marks. "Character" summarizes it nicely. The lines of the fairing and tank and tail have drawn me since I first saw one; a little eccentricity only adds to the appeal, like a mole on a beautiful face.

Or is that too romantic?

Brankin:

I'm hoping someone will move this thread to the HOME COURT area. . . better yet, it may just pop up on the Buell website.

Phase 1 was the bottom end where we tested the waters to see just how carried away we'd get.

Fact is, it's tough to say "just keep it stock" when the balanced flywheels, S&S heavy duty rods, new oil pump and so forth each add so little to the total.

Aaron excels at "balancing" a package and, at the same; time has been sensitive to the past/future of one of the most notable of S-2's. The cases were in poor condition, so off they went to the powder coaters.

The bottom end is now dialed in with all new and carefully matched seals, bearings spacers, updated cylinder studs, the windage tray, the new Buell oil pump and all the stuff that goes along with it.

The last I'd heard Aaron was in talks with someone about a new 88" cylinder that sounded like something very interesting. I think, seeing as this bike carried LOTS of parts and pieces that didn't show up in Buell production until the following year (saddlebags, lowers, the nylon swingarm protector) and some that never did, that it'd be most excellent to outfit the bike with a new type of cylinder. We'll see how all that goes.

Aaron has prescribed a "moderated approach" with respect to heads, carb, intake, valves, pistons and exhaust. But, alas, when was the last time you read a piece of Buell literature that urged moderation? . . . ever met a Bueller who, when horsepower was a stake, was "moderate"? Problem is, I have been in the "hey, it's enough for me to have all the fun I want" camp. I suspect I'm breaking camp and heading for the FMJH "more is just a start" school of philosophy.

Jim Bantz, Brushist Extraordinaire, has the bodywork and I'm betting it's a lush as everything he's done in the past. We're going to need to choose party clothes soon. I'm torn between the "one of a kind" green and it's LAP OF AMERICA white pearl. We can discuss that as the thread moves along.

I also have to start thinking about how we wind this program up. I mean, the bike was sent to Colorado in a truck, what an embarrassing way that would be for the reborn LOA bike to leave. Nah.....it's gotta be a road trip. This'll take some thought.

There is JUST SOMETHING about an S-2. The damn things catch you in their tractor beam. I mean, who doesn't dig a 1996 S-1 . . . a 1998 S1 White Lightning. . . the simplicity and pure functionality of a 1997 M2 Cyclone but an S2 is lust, pure unmitigated lust. This is a motorcycle you don't simply "ride". Each time I go anywhere on this motorcycle, well...I've described it as a Buellgasm.

Brankin...am I wrong here?

Interesting how the deeply entrenched, over the edge, Buell nuts from all generations, ride whatever Buell they do, always end up with an S2. Think about it. Road Thing....Henrik.....you never hear them talk much, but there, in the back of each garage, quietly sitting ready top please, is the S2 Thunderbolt. Aaron has more Buells than most folks have garage space. He can ride anything he wants. Guess what his "rider" is? You got it.

I like all motorcycles, but the S2 never fails to evoke pure passion and remind me of that feeling I had when I was 8 and watched the big kid down the street ride off on that motorcycle.

When that engine rumbled, you could go anywhere...the world was a slate and the bike a piece of chalk. I dreamt of just "getting on and going". My dream got serious the day the older girl across the street took me on my first "long ride" from Topeka to Dover, KS on this 1952 Cushman that sits here in my office. That day it was as if I'd been taken up in a hot air balloon and seen the globe from above. I suppose I knew I'd always own a motorcycle as my personal front row ticket to participate in life instead of being a car bound spectator.

The S2 is the single motorcycle that, without fail, makes that dream come true each time I get on it. It's about passion, life and people.

That suits me.

Court,
I see that you changed the tappet anti-rotation pins to '00-up ones. Why?
What is the difference? Would you suggest I do it on my '98 S-1?

Court

Just catching up on the big inch S2 engine that you are building up. Had a couple of questions that I'm sure you could help with.

1. Barney used to have one of those high zoot Zippers oil pumps and I see that you have elected to use the '98 and newer Buell unit. Why?

2. You have also plugged the oil return gallery from the cam cavity to the sump. What did you use to plug this return hole and should I do the same?

3. Are there any other lubrication mods that you would suggest?

Thanks. I look forward to your comments.

Jim:

The oil pump was simply based on Aaron's suggestion that the new Buell oil pump, and new gears, are really good and are a proper compliment to the motor. I couldn't recall what Barney had, I know there was a Zipper's oil scraper on the flywheels.

I **think** the plugging question was answered HERE. If you need more info, let me know and I'll check the notes I got from Aaron with his suggestions. Frankly, I've placed my trust in him and could tell you about everything *I* know about the REAL REASONS with a magic marker on the inside of a matchpack.

I'll try to do a summary of the various lubrication mods. I'll also be looking to Aaron for suggestions on oil. Frankly, I've always run the good old plain jane Harley-Davidson oil and changed it frequently. I suspect advances, and my personal experience with a F-250 (that's had Mobil 1 every 3K since new and now has 160,000) may get me thinking about changing. Please lord, not another oil discussion.

: )

The part of this that intrigues me is that the S2, with it's whopping 52HP, was nothing but a hoot to ride. I suspect it'll be much more fun the next 10 years. I'm thinking Ferris and I may need to find a chance to ride this thing around the Western US. I'd love to see his face, trust me he knows the S2's soul as well as most of us, when he lights this thing off.

Wait?.....have I committed to let Ferris ride this thing?

Hehehehehe.....anyting white and S-2 stirs BOTH our souls!

I can't wait. . . I'm, quite literally, dreaming of a "WHITE CHRISTMAS".

Court,
You head to CA to ride with Ferris, make sure you let me know. We've not yet met face to face (since we've 'known' each other), but that will be one hell of an adventure, especially if you throw that Ferris feller in the mix. I owe you a lot, in thanks, memories and tales. The Ride Across North America bike is going to be rebuilt and have the engine massaged by the NHRS crew this winter, I'm probably on about the same path as you engine wise. Lap of America, Ride Across North America, both are historic bikes, in my mind, and are in great hands with Aaron and the boys. Can't wait to see your results, can't wait to feel mine. See you at Lake Isabella, perhaps?
Alex

Court, How goes the rebuild effort? I'm particularly interested in the finished product. I'm really starting to think that a S2, with a few updates, will be my next Buell. Please advise when possible.

S-2 project advancing wonderfully. . . opted for entire new clutch, although it wasn't totally necessary, I followed the "it'll neever be easier than now" logic.

Phase 2 complete in the next 2 weeks!

How excited am I? . . .
