I've got the full Buell race kit on my 99 X-1 with the newer style race muffler (Not the Supertrapp type). I'm not thrilled about the prospect of having to repack the muffler every 3-7K miles, so I'm contemplating switching to the D&D muffler. They make a version that will fit the Buell race header. I already have all the updated mounts, etc., so I'm not concerned with mounting issues.

I'm curious if anyone has used or heard both and can give me some info to help me with this decision. I'm mainly interested in sound level, tone, and performance. My race muffler sounds beefy and is pretty loud. I'm curious if the D&D is even louder and if the tone is any deeper than the race can. I like loud, but only loud and deep sounding. I hate tinny sounding exhausts.

I've had a V&H and the D&D. I'll take the D&D any day. It is loud- to the point of being obnoxious some say. My wife immediately commented how much quieter the V&H was. In my opinion the D&D sounds beefy but not terribly deep. It is not like an import car's bass type exhaust -more like an open Harley. I have 6000+ miles on mine and its running great.

Won't the D&D eventually need repacking too? Is it a sealed unit like a stock muffler?

I just got a race kit for my M2 and I am surprised how heavy the stainless steel muffler is. I am seriously thinking about modifying the V&H I currently use (with the stock header) to fit the race header. I've heard some Buells with the late style race muffler, but I've never heard a race header equipped bike with the special D&D unit. I could only assume that it would be as loud and deep as the D&D muffler for the stock header.

Delta:

I was at HD/Buell in Toledo, Ohio last Thursday. They had a D&D muffler on their clearance table that looked like it would fit a race header for 75% off. It may be worth a phone call if you are looking for one.

Ok, i did alot of looking into the D&D for teh race header, and supposedly, there is a difference, teh brackets..

I will be switching to either a full D&D system, OR a force when I get back to VA, will know tomorrow...

Anyway, I intended to look into seeing if the regular slip on will fit the race header..it looks liek it SHOULD..but...

Anyway, yeah, the D&D is loud..I love it though..I want either to stick with D&D, or go to force..dont know which yet..

anyway, if you wanna wait...I can verify whether or not it will work with the race header..then everying goes to the classifieds...

Mark,

Thank you very much for the tip. I called Toledo and bought that D&D for the race header this morning. Hopefully, they quoted me 50% off vs. 75% off, but it was still a great price. They are shipping it to me, since I'm in CA, so I should get in a week or so.

If anyone is interested, I'll probably have Buell race muffler for sale once I get the D&D installed.

Brett,

If you get a chance, tell us the weight difference between the D&D and the race muffler. Post some pics, too. Instead of modifying my V&H to fit my race header, I might get a D&D also. I'm not real interested in LOUD, though, but I would put up with it.

Will do. I'm not as concerned with loud either than an I'm not having to repack the thing every 3-7k miles. I don't really mind loud though as long as it is controllable at low RPMs when you cruise through neighborhoods and things.

I had a D&D on my S3T and swapped for a V&H. The D&D was loud enough that my ears were ringing after longer rides - and this despite wearing earplugs and a full face helment. I'm much happier with the V&H.

Deltacruiser,

Kevin can do a Drummer modification of your stock muffler. The Drummer XB cans are highly regarded so hopefully the tuber cans are at least as good. That's another route you might consider going.

Devdawg,

Once I get the D&D and make sure it fits and that I'm keeping it, etc. I'll figure out what I want for the race can and you'll get first crack at it.

I've got a force with baffle on my 115hp X1. Its too loud IMO. Sounds killer. But with my big N80 cam -- the engine is "off cam" untill about 3000rpms. And thats when the sound goes to extremly loud.

Sounds good with ear plugs in- But I am sure that other non bike people hate it.

xb stage 3 heads 30degree dome, cp 12.5 domed pistons, Andrews n80 cam, hsr42 carb, force intake, force exhuast, dyna coil, twintec ignition.

static psi was 210.

I baked my nose cone ignition on the dyno so the dang revlimit got changed somehow to 4400rpms. So I've yet to feel the full power. I guess its a good thing so I can get used to riding with that much power.

I got the D&D tonight and put it on. I only got to take a very short test ride of about 2 miles, but the sound is excellent. The pavement was wet, so I didn't really test out the power. The D&D doesn't seem louder than the Buell race can to me, but the note is deeper and crisper.

As far as weight goes, the D&D weighs 10.1 pounds and the race can weighs 7.7 per my digital freight scale. The D&D is a bit longer also. Once installed there is only about a 1/2" of clearance between the end of the pipe and the rear tire. Apparently that is normal per the photos on the D&D website.

I'll give a better report of my impression on the D&D this weekend, when I get to take a normal length ride.

Devdawg, I give you first crack at the race can once I get some longer testing under my belt on the D&D.

only half an inch on yours? For some reason, i am thinking that it should be more..I will have to check it when I get home...

ONE THING. I had an issue with it walking on teh elbow pipe...it took a while to get it to seat firmly...BUT, it hasnt walked since.

JUST make a mark on that elbow, so, you can keep an eye on it..you dont want to pole-vault the bike..

The only thing I really have to offer at this point...

Chase,

I have the race header version, so there is no elbow to use with the race header as the race header makes the bend and travels back under the engine.

Your advice about marking the connection so you can tell if the pipe is walking backwards is a great idea though. I'll definitely do that.

Thanks for the report on the weight. I've heard good things about D&D mufflers but I've never known anyone who used the rare race header version. I've never even seen one in person.

I've started the modifications to my V&H muffler to use on my race header. It's ironic that after all the fuss about the front mounting tab cracking on V&H's, I'm cutting mine off. It worked flawlessly for the 5 years and 25,000 miles I've used it.

From talking to Al at American Sportbike, the only obvious difference is that the race header version doesn't have the elbow in front. That being said, I haven't seen the two side by side either.

Delta, what i was saying, and I am sure you figured it out...I was more using the elbow as a reference...BUT, that is where you need to keep an eye on it walking back...

AS far as the race header version, yeha, Al told me the same thing last fall...BUT, talking to a few others, there is SUPPOSED to be a difference in the mounting brackets on teh race version...

I dont know, BUT, I will be checking it out as soon as I get back to VA....lets say, a week, maybe a little more on the update....

BUT, I bought the D&D full system, so I am happy...

Cant wait to get that on there...

Chase,

I hear you. I can't wait until this weekend, when I hopefully have time for a nice long ride. That things sounds sweeeeet!

Maybe when you get back, we can swap photos or compare notes and figure out what the actual difference is in the regular slip on and the race header only version.

Not a prob. My old slip on is spoken for, BUT, befroe I give it up, I am gonna see if it will work witht eh race header...no big deal, I have to pull teh stocker off anyway...

But yeah, I will find a camera, and go from there..

So...with that said...
