hey,ya'll,
when i first bought my 99s3t,i ran out and bought a new race ecm because i THOUGHT i'd be making big changes-forcewinder and v&h can.
after 2000 miles,i've learned that, for me,it runs plenty strong as is.i'm modding the stock airbox just like slaughter's bike and adding a puke can to get breather splooge out of the mix.
an exhaust can has moved way down the list because i don't need the oomph and i like the stealth factor the stock pipe gives.
having said all that, would a power commander with the stock ecm be a good thing? i don't have the sw for resetting tps yet,and DO NOT want to screw up this sweet running, well behaved machine.
All input and opinions gratefully accepted.thanks.

The power commander would be a mistake.
I would go for the race ECM.
Less screwing around involved.
Just plug it in and have the TPS zeroed.

I have the 2 box solution, i have to agree with Nate, with the possible regs enforcement ahead keep the stock stuff, the pc3 will have you dinking around with the wiring, then either spending for dyno time, or using a compromize map. the race box would be better from that stand point, plug and play rather than plug and pray, you dont plan on any mild mods do you?
( cams porting etc, then pc3 makes sense if you keep the fi )Go wild you prolly want a carb any way.

Thanks, nate and dog!!Saw a PC on e-bay for $99 buy it now.based on ya'll's advice,i'll see how the stock ecm picks up the airbox mods, keep the race ecm on the shelf until i can afford sw for tps.just what i needed to know.
my fi is flawless-for now...but dagnabbit luke,i've finally figured carbs...if it ever gets dodgy,i'll be huntin' a 40mm cv carb!!

Boz:

your welcone, the vsds software price has been reduced, recently check asb or Daves easy to use just get the right usb adaptor,
when you reduce restriction at both ends of the motor you will want a little more fuel, the stock ecm will be ridable but it will run rather "warm" and pinging and knocking will become more appearent, for a while CV carbs were plentiful and dirt cheap, I gave it more than a little thought, I have decided to leave the inside of the mill pretty much alone, i put the bronze gear in thats about it, so i decided to try adding the monkey box its ok its just more stuff to break. I am contemplating a race ecm and replacing the holed undertray, that gets rid of some extra wire, of all of the stuff on my bike the wiring seems be the only thing that gives significant trouble
