I'll second that. Buellistic recently enlightened me with some great Buell info as well.

Thanks everybody.

I learned about the oil level issue by overfilling just once and having it spit out so much into my airfilter that it "leaked" on my leg while riding.

Also, LaFayette has given me some great advice about routing all extra fluids out to a can behind the license plate holder instead of back into the engine. I will follow that advice because I don't need the extra oil getting burned up rather than saving those drops for proper disposal.

I hope to finally meet LaFayette in the morning if we are not getting a Winter Monsoon.

Otherwise, we'll catch you all out there sooner or later...

Thanks,
DJ

I'm almost afraid to post this for fear of blowing the apparent good Karma right now, but...

I bought my 99S3t w/4000 miles and joined this board last November.Bike was box stock.
Thanks to the members of this community, I've been able to decide on and make the following mods,WITH CONFIDENCE that they would work for me.That's really important when you're spending money you can't afford and working on a bike you have no previous exp. with, that's running perfectly before I start messin' with it!
-Gutted stock airbox, added K&N and venturi ring
-Routed breathers to Jaz puke can
-Race ECM
-Vance&Hines can
-Upgrade primary chain tensioner

I installed the ECM and can at the same time.bolted everything up.started and ran minimal warmup.Immediately went and held 3200 rpm in 4th for several miles several times.
When I got back,I had to drop the idle down as it was at 1400 hot.
Drumroll...

NO TPS RESET !!!!!

I can't believe it.Starts, idles, warms, winds like a banshee to 6800. Well, maybe the banshee is me screamin'...

I take no credit.I thank my fellow Badwebbers for their help and knowlege so freely given.

As for the TPS??
Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then!!!

And if that wasn't enough good news...
I have to keep my bike at a garage about 10 miles from where I live.My GF just bought a house today...with a GARAGE!!!

That's great you didn't have to reset the TPS. The TPS reset is one of the most frustrating things about the DDFI. If I was only a little smarter, I would write a shareware for it or design an adjustable TPS.

Make sure the THROTTLE is full off position !!!

Take you battery terminals off, negitive first
then positive, STRACK THEM TOGETHER LIKE STRACKING A MATCH, reinstall positive first and then negative .... Then go for a 50 mile ride and
you should notice a big improvement !!!

LaFayette,
I've learned to take your suggestions as gospel and thank you for them.
Should I do the above to mine? Thanks. Greg

Hey Greg-
I am trying to get my brother to come down with me to Ocean Springs the first full week of April. Maybe I will bring the S3 down and we can go out for some rides?
I'd like to ride someone else's to compare. The only other S3 that I have ridden obviously hadn't had much done because it was pretty bad. Most of the time mine is decent except the 1st mile when it is cold.

Thanks, Guys for the tips for a cooler Buell. The oil level might explain the the recent smoking and rough running.
I've never heard of checking the oil while motor is running.
My Buell has a painted engine. Is there a safe way to remove the paint from the primary and cam covers? Thanks again, Cactus Jack
P.S. Where do I get a race ECM. I heard that the Harley shop doesn't sell them any longer

Hi Ford92, Somewhere in Bad Weather is a "How To" on bag repair but at the moment I don't know where it is. As far as matching paint you should be able to go to a good auto paint store and be able to match the paint by computer. Cactus Jack

Ford92, look in Knowledge Vault under (Bags, Luggage and Misc. Stuff). You might find something you can use there. CactusJack

which color? I did replace a fairing and saddlebag cover, but the replacements came from the factory.

sounds like a good opportunity to repaint all the body work just the way you want it. You're almost halfway there now and it all comes off easy.

CJ,
There was a brief period of time where the race ECM's were unavailable. I was sure that I had probably bought the last one in July, 2004. It was only a couple of months later when they were available again.
