Yo All, I maintained my bike this weekend and then test rode without tightening the derby cover screws and you would never guess that the cover fell off. As I am in a custody battle and always short of funds can anyone offer a factory/aftermarket/serious custom with gold and diamonds, skulls, etc for a low price. Free would be even better. Thanks Den

I've got the stock one off my S-1 you could have.
It's just a plain cover with a nice scratch in it though; no skulls, eagles, or other such bling.

Ok, that will work for me, mine was scratched anyway. I have a new stainless steel rear brake line for a 95 to 98 Lightning. Do you need/want it? I have a 99 X1 so it does not fit. Thanks Den denis12658@yahoo.com

Just shoot me your address and I'll ship it out to you.
I'll try and polish it up abit before I send it to you too. I hope the o-ring didn't fall off along with the derby cover (just a heads-up)

Thanks Seth, I sent you an email with my address. I did save the O-ring but left it on my desk where my son will use it for tug of war with the dog or so I fear...

Rocket, I love the skull covers but they are only 3 or 5 screw!

Thanks again...Den

I bought a five screw one off Ebay over here, just because, but I got a matching belt buckle with it, and it was very cheap compared to new price. Nice ornament.

They are available for Sportster \ Buell. Click 'product type'.

I have no idea. I wanted it for my 99X1 and bought it even though it was clearly marked for "95 to 98 Buell Lightning". It's not the right one of course. If anyone wants it the price is the freight.

Seth, did you get my email about the cover?

I ordered the locknut and spring from Appleton and the order arrived today with a gasket and screws too!! DaveS you guys rock!

Thanks to everyone...Den

Someone here has that said the secret to keeping the screws from being hard to remove/breaking is to break all 4 screws loose before you remove any of them. And when putting them in to hold the cover in flush contact, take all 4 screws down to a touch, and then tighten them a little bit at a time. Same for the two screws on the smaller primary inspection cover.

Removed them nicely. Had to use an impact tool! Broke em loose and then 1/4 turn each at a time.
Going back in is when i stripped the bottom screw. Used the same care, but must not have been flush.

Will the stud treatment work?, I am not sure if the cover is supposed to seat solid or float on that ring.

replace those accursed torx thingies with god-fearing stainless steel allen heads -- 14 X 20 if memory serves . . . . . . pick up a handfull of ss washers to sit under em as well -- they will keep the stuck fastener syndrome down to a dull roar

the cover should seat solidly on the primary cover -- that will seat the quad ring nicely --

I didn't realize that they were 1/4 20's.
Here is what i'm gonna do. The torx screws are 5/8"x1/4 20. I will get [or make] 1" long studs. I bought some 3M yellow adhesive and will use that instead of loctite. [not one fastner on my sporty was loctited] I will use coupling nuts [I found 4 of them in my supplies], lock washers and Gorilla snot [the old name for 3M yellow] The coupling nuts will extend past the derby recess so that i can tighten everything. Studs are a much better way to fasten things to aluminum than torx, cap or any other screw in fastner.

Don't strip a thread tightening to much... That would realy "torx" you off....

Denis,
The derby cover has been sent via UPS.

Good luck.

I'm gonna use brass threaded rod. The coupling nuts are 7/8" long, so i will cut them shorter. Just stopped at Home Depot to pick up the rod.
I think I will invest in an inch/pounds torque wrench...?

Den,
I hope the cover arrived at your door as promised and not lost forever in some sort of postal service limbo.
