Okay, so I get home after the ride from work. Take off the gear, go in the house, then go back into the garage to get something and then I hear something weird. Sounds like it's coming from the rear of the engine, around the battery area. Sounds like a tea kettle starting to boil or a small electric motor turning slowly. I know it's not the starter because (for other reasons at the time) I disconnected the battery and the sound continued. As the bike cools the sound diminishes until it stops. The bike is a 99 X1. Anyone heard anything similar?  | ||

There have been a couple of threads about this at BadWeb recently. I've occasionally noticed a similar noise from my S3. The popular theory seems to be that this is moisture that condensed in the transmission/primary (via the vent hose) boiling off. I'm not quite convinced THAT much moisture could get in nor that the oil gets hot enough to boil off water that vigorously. Any other theories? | ||

Belt relaxing? I heard somthing "similar" came to the conclusion that the belt tightens up with heat and then relaxes causing a strange noise not too loud though doesn't sound the same as what your describing  | ||

It's not very loud, but I don't have a stethescope so it's kind of hard to pinpoint. Tried the long screwdriver bit but nothing definitive. Besides, me hearing isn't that great anyway. Too many years working around turbines I guess.......... | ||

I've got one of the cooling fans installed that works off a thermostat. It is amazing how ofter it comes on after the bike sits for a few minutes ever in fairly mild weather and especially if I've been in traffic. Obviously the tempature increases right after shut down when the oil quits circulating, the noise could be the oil tank cooling down. | ||
