Had my X1 for about 3 weeks and I had parked it outside Luna park which is situated in cool and trendy St kilda here in melbourne. When I arrived back to the bike(post coffee) it had attracted a small crowd of admirers from the 200 odd people lined up outside Luna park waiting to get tickets. After answering a few questions I jumped aboard and fired it up and the race pipe insured I had the full attention of all 200 + .I pulled smoothly away to the left for about 10 ft and was suddenly on my arse sliding down the road! I stood up and picked up the bike in one motion in less than 1 second hoping no one had noticed. They had and there was just no way out but to accept I was not cool anymore.
I pretended to search for some oil on the road to deflect the blame from myself and it seemed to work as others joined in to find the cause of this sudden dismount. But even in the split second it took to hit the ground I new I had left that bloody steering lock on!Because the forks had twisted in the triple tree you could'nt pick my mistake the wheel appeared to be pointing straight ahead. That was some years ago and I have only just started to take the Buell back to this spot.Has anybody else been caught out ?

I did that, in 1980. I was on Marathon Key, riding a Shovelhead in those days. Still embarrassed about it.

I once parked my bike and let the clutch out before turning the bike off. It got my wife's attention on (and almost off) the back of the bike..

It happens

The steering lock IS bad but, there is nothing worse than a rotor lock... and if ya let the clutch out quick enough you could buy yourself a new rotor. Not that it has happened to me but... I know someone that knows someone that it happened to.

I have pulled away with the steering lock on, managed to keep it on to wheels.

My buddy just bought an R6, and we were going to go out riding. I was waiting for him at my house and he was late. I had gone in and out a few times, and After 4 years of owning the bike I finally tried to pull away with the disc lock on. 7 days and about 125 bucks later I was able to ride again.

It does happen.

None of the above has EVER happened to me more than a few times each. That's all I'm sayin' and we're not gonna discuss it!

-I've even walked away from an old 67 dresser I once had without putting down the kickstand. It stood for a good 7 or 8 seconds before it went over on the crash bars. Stooopid!

I has a U-shaped kryptonite lock on my old Yami Special. When I forgot about it and pulled away, the heavy mag wheel snapped it cleanly with just a scratch on the mag.

I sure it would be disastrous for a lightened XB front.

Pulled into the lone Mobile gas station in New Cuyama, Ca (on the 166). Low on blood sugar, tired, and had lots of baggage on the FXD which was making me sit funny. Put the kickstand down, swung my leg over about 3/4 of the way, then noticed the beginnings of a cataclysmic event...

Loli parked next to me, 2 sport bikes & riders in front of me, & a Mexican family in an SUV behind me all watched in my feeble attempt to save the situation.

"I WILL NOT drop this bike! (grunt) I WILL NOT DROP THIS BIKE! (passes whole pineapple through the end of the digestive tract) OK, I'll put this bike down very gently....."

Left leg was pinned under the primary, right leg was flailing in the air. The 2 sport riders and father and son from the SUV swarmed upon the pathetic fool and his bike and hoisted everything off the ground.

Turns out that my odd seating position (with the bag behind me) kept me from really kicking that stand all the way forward........

I laugh about it so often.... Loli more so than me!

Dumping your bike on its side for no good reason seems to be far more common than I had imagined, almost compulsory at least once it seems!I feel a little better adjusted to that sudden loss of dignity now that I know I am not alone.Still half expect someone to come up to me when I am in that spot and ask if I am the idiot who dropped his buell. like many tube owners my bike has morphed into a totally different looking machine over the years with all the taking off and putting on of stuff,so I guess it wont happen?

On my old Yamaha I pulled in to a gravel parking area and when I put my feet on the ground to stand up the bike slid out from under me and there I was standing with my bike on its side between my legs.

Loose gravel sucks.

The old man and I were on our way to Alaska in 99. Him on a new Venture, me on a Sporty. Went to pull out of the fuel stop at Pink Mountian when The old man lost his balance and dropped his fully loaded touring bike. I jumped off mine, ran over and helped him get his upright. When I turned to go back to mine, there it was on its side. Never put the stand down.

And just this last tuesday I forgot the steering lock on the Cyclone. Broke the air box and brake lever.

we had been tenting for 2 or 3 days and were up at 2:00 am

On my way to school one AM on the suzi, hit oil or gravel while turning wound up on my butt in the middle of a 4 way intersection 5 lanes wide,
Major loss of dignity

Rolled up to a red light one day, put my feet down on the big white line, feet slid, bike rolled over on the shift lever, I am laying on top all splayed like a $5 hooker on top of the header burning my thigh, jump off like a frog in a hot pan of water, sheepishly pry the thing back onto the wheels all slipping and sliding, jump on, fire it up, put it into first which turned out to be second, let out the clutch and stalled it, the light is turning yellow, start it again, get it in first, hit the gas and clutch, spin/squeak the tire, pull a wheelie all in front of a cop at the intersection. He had the decency not to pull me over. I like to get all my boneheaddedness out of the way in one swift session. Took it home and straightened the foot peg and shift lever, vowed never to speak of this again....

On the second day with my Gold Wing I proudly rode it to work in a triumph of ego and in search of the most visible parking spot that would elicit the most attention for me I turned it around in the sloping driveway. One thing about GW's they are seriously heavy and a bit top heavy too and it went down fast as hard as a rock. The bike was pointing downhill and as I was too embarrassed to ask for help I wrestled with it for about 15 minutes to get it back on it's feet. My heart was pounding and I was sweat drenched but I got it up and running and parked it. Thank god the running boards fold up and the rolls bars prevent any damage. About two days later I did the exact same thing making a U-turn in the apron of a driveway. I felt like the world's biggest idiot!

That first post of yours was great. A sense of humor sure does improve life. My dad had similar tribulations with his old GoldThing. He has never regretted selling it and buying his S3T.

pulled into Vegas for the first time (two weeks and change after DEROSing back to the world) -- all night ride, arrive at the first red light, my partner on my left puts his feet down waiting for the light to turn green, partner on my right puts his feet down waiting for the light to change, I just wait -- no feet down, which lasted, oh, about, 3 seconds before I did my Laugh In inpersonation -- bike layin on it's side, idling contentedly -- partners ask, "you OK, man?"

"You bet!"

sigh -- those illegal smiles will getcha ever' time!

Thanks Blake, I think a sense of humor is very important in life and we need to be able to laugh at ourselves too. It just went from bad to worse in what seemed a fraction of a second. Previous to the stoplight I was feeling particularly macho on my bada$$ Buell. Afterward I was glad for the acceleration to get me out of there!

Ready to sell my GW too, have only rode it a couple times this year and I need the money for a custody hearing.

They can have my Buell when they pry my cold dead fingers from the grips...

I quit locking my bike up at work with one of those thick kryptonite cables because I took off once without removing it. Didn't wipe or anything but it bent my front fender and darned near caused me to each cement. After a long day of engineering work the last thing I needed was to wipe out because I was daydreaming and not paying attention.

Ok, I got one!
Had a mirror stem come loose before a ride with my buddies. Throwing my hands up just before we're ready to roll, I run to the garage for a wrench and tighten it down. Raising the bike up level, I put stand up, as habit would dictate, make the final adjustment with wrench still in hand. With everyone suited up, mounted, idling, and waiting, I let the bike down to rush the wrench back to the garage. After several outbursts of cursing, straightening shift lever, and taping turn signal lens back on, I endure the usual chiding as only the best riding buddies can do.
Ya gotta love it!

I thought I was the only one to do something like that. Last night I did the same thing. Pulled away while turning so I was rolling right along when I realized the lock was on. My sore arm, hand and knee will heal but I need a few replacement parts for the X-1. OUCH!!
Anyway now I can't get the steering lock off. I put the key in to unlock it and the key turned halfway and stuck. The fork is no longer locked but I can't get the key out.

Any suggestions.
Thanks,
Dave

I did it once. There was a guy apparently in love with my bike...watched me ride off every afternoon. This one day I forgot the alarm disk lock and used the standard one, also forgetting the bright orange tether for it. I took off full throttle for effect until the front wheel suddenly started skidding. I grabbed the bars hard to keep 'em straight and put my feet down...just saving it from falling over.

lowandloud undo the small grub screw located on the lock barrel .The barrel of the lock will move in and out but thats ok then remove the key and dont tighten the grub screw up again.dont use the lock again just remove it when you replace the steering head bearings and plug the hole. When you hit the deck the lock pin bends rendering it useless. Its dangerous anyway for the likes of us as we have already painfully found out.
