I just bought a 2000 S3T and it bounces like a car with bad shocks. The dealer told me the rear shock is blown and needs to be replaced. Does anyone know if it is rebuildable? The stealer wants $600 plus labor for a replacement and aftermarket seems to be even more. It is the recall replacement unit. | ||

It can be re-built for a lot less but has to be done by a reputable suspension shop. I had mine re-built for like $150 but I'm a heavy guy and I blew it out again within a year so I went for the "Works Performance" after market shock set up for my weight and riding style. It's about $200 more than the stock "Showa" but it's fully adjustable and customer re-buildable. I'm happy I spent the cash for a good shock. The "Showa" rear shock is crap in my book. BC Steve | ||

Bandirola, What Stevem said. You will find that the stock showa has always been a major problem, and even after several attempts from the factory to remedy the situation, it is still a turd. But there is hope. Both Penske and Works Performance make a very good shock to replace it with. If you go to the BadWeb sponsors, and look up American sports bike, you will find that Al has good prices on what you need, and can walk you through the step by step process to get you fitted properly with spring tension, and the like. I know that they are a bit more expensive, but you will find that the ride properties of your bike, that you liked with the showa, will improve to such a degree that you will fight the urge to kiss the shock every time you put the sidestand down. Had the Showa on my S-2 redone by Aftershocks in Palo Alto and it worked very well after that.Revalve and new seals,etc was about 300.00. A cheaper alternative to the Penskes etc. | ||

I rebuilt my own. All it takes is some patience and common sense (a press and a vice helps, too). I used RaceTech gold valves and seals. Works better than ever and after 5,000 miles is still working great. | ||

FMJ, Is your S2 Showa the 16" or the later 14"? Think it makes any difference in performance and long term reliability? Mines the earlier, longer one. Also, got a number for Aftershocks?  I also have a line on an original S2 WP that has never been on a bike, but it is the one with the little welded-on shock eye (looks pretty flimsy to me). Trying to decide if it's worth it to get it and try to upgrade it to the later style, "beefier" shock eye. Anybody know if this would be do-able (or worth it? HellBuelly J | ||

Showa was latest rendition short one.Seemed to ride better but as it has shat the bed by puking all its fluid over time my SOP feeling was a bit off.Have to ask Erir(Sportyeric) as he has it now. I suppose it depends on how much you are going to have to pay for shock.P.S. I have a beat on WP off of a 1996 S-2,not the welded on eye,that I will sell you,lots-o-miles on it so will need TLC.Look here,they work on WP stuff also.http://www.aftershocks-suspension.com/pages/home.htm | ||

I put the works performance on my M2, and moved my latest Buel shock, the beefier one, to my S2. So far, both are working fine. REX | ||

Hey Rick_a, can you tell us more about the rebuild for the rear shock? The basic steps, etc. I have the newest recall shock (with the rock hard spring). Speaking of which, is there any source for a softer spring? | ||

I just got one of those $600.00 WP shocks for my S1W and now that I am reading more I am a little worried about it. Apparently the 1st recall was due to the WP shock breaking and causing the bike to pole vault. I know the one I just bought is a bit different, but not much by the looks of it. A simple magnet test will tell if the shock eyelets are in question ... If a magnet sticks to them the shock is fine ... Still running my OEM shock on my 19997 S3T as it passed the magnet test !!!
